Although posted this on the credit card forum, thought I might get a better response on this one:

Have something of a problem which would appreciate some advice on:

Earlier this week received a letter from 'Barclaycard Collections' (also listing 1st Credit as the company to contact) reference a Barclaycard account with an outstanding balance of £1218.52. The letter claims that the account was passed over to 1st Credit in 2005. I have admittedly moved address twice in recent years due to marriage breakdown.

Now, I cleared my Barclaycard account earlier this year as quieried the amount and had been paying instalments, but found myself in the position to clear the balance. It was with HFO collections and had an outstanding balance of £1131.36. I subsequently received a letter from HFO confirming that the account was paid in full.

Am very confused about the whole situation. Firstly, as mentioned in the inital post, the account numbers don't match - I think I recognise the first one as the number of my old credit card, but the second one (quoted on the letter I received this week) doesn't match it and does not contain enough digits to be a credit card number (is 13 digits rather than 16 that were on the old account and card).

I've subsequently received a letter from 1st Credit, and what I assume to be calls (I won't answer the phone) but remain confused about the balances - disregarding, for the moment, the fact that there are somehow two account numbers (and that I have paid one of them in full) I owed £2354.83 for a credit card with a £400 credit limit?! Doesn't seem quite right!

Any advice?

    Hi Reggie

I would send the prove it letter to them firstly - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2
Then if it is the correct account and is your old debt that has been paid off you can send them the letter from HFO that says it was paid in full.

Thanks - may well do that.

Still concerned about it though - can't understand how can have two account numbers when KNOW I didn't ever have two cards.

It may not be your account at all... :) Hence the "prove it" letter... the amount of times DCAs chase the wrong people for a debt are shocking...

But isn't there a possibility that it pertains to card protection or something?
  • Guess I'll just have to send them a letter asking what this is for, as definitely never had two Barclaycards.

The onus is in THEM to prove you're liable for the debt, not you that you don't, the prove it letter should start the ball rolling.
Click here for Martins (MSE) advice on who to contact with Debt Issues - YOU HAVE NO REASON TO USE A FEE PAYING DEBT MANAGEMENT COMPANY- THEY CANNOT DO ANYMORE FOR YOU THAN THOSE LISTED IN MY LINK ABOVE.

All information given by myself is offered informally and without prejudice - if in doubt seek help from a qualified and insured professional

Okay - will adapt the letter to suit what I need to ask - thanks for the advice!
