I've had this problem too and am also on plain ol' IE6 with wanadoo/orange my current ISP. It was happening just on this site and only intermittently it worked ok, but evenso, I cleaned everything I could repeatedly and even sent an email as I'm no techie and was reaching pc bashing stages!

After reading the threads from others with the same problem, followed the instructions and links from thread to thread repeatedly, but it still didn't work. I think I've finally cracked it now tho'. I logged out of MSE, took it off my trusted sites, cleared cookies, removed it from my home page, and files, ran CC and for good measure, ran ashampoo winoptimizer. (not neccessarily in that order ;) . )

This is my first post since then so fingers crossed it'll have paragraphs.

Ok, this has got to get sorted out! It is really driving me up the wall, i dont want to come on MSE because its just so hard and tiring with all the problems! As there as so many people with the same problems, it is obviously something to do with the actual MSE site...can any one shed any light on this??

When you see 'Error on page' displayed, that is a local to your computer message i.e. it could not successfully display the page correctly for some reason, which could be caused by many different things. To get to the bottom of this, you need to eliminate every possible cause, as it could be different reasons for different users. The fact that thousands of users never have these problems, points more to something on your machine.

I too have been having problems with this site and forum's display (plain text, odd to look at) for a couple of months, and to be honest, it's put me off visiting.

It's always worked at home (Freedom2Surf, browsing with Firefox) but at work (work's own ISP) it always looks shot.

However, just logged on here first thing this morning and it looks fine!

    Did you fix it?!

In my case, MSE works fine when I disable the web accelerator. Must be to do with cached pages, probably will have to delete Tiscali Accelerator and re-install so as to start collecting true pages.

It appears it may be a proxy issue, or one of the possible reasons. I have been getting this for some time, and on another thread MSE Neil suggested about Onspeed.

It has happened several times since, and when it happens I switch off Onspeed, press F5 and the page is ok. Then Onspeed back on again, and the stylesheet format disappears again.

So is it a missing file in Onspeed's cache, or not transmitted from it, or is there some handshaking issue? I know little about about how browsers and web pages communicate - eg how subsidiary files are called.

But this is only happening with this site, out of at least 50 visited in the last week. The only other problem of any kind is on a viamichelin route search - buffer overrun detected.

And I have been reading MSE for nearly two years now, with Onspeed on the connection since before that. The only previous times I have had this stylesheet issue, it was very clear from posted threads that everyone on the whole site was experiencing it for those few hours

And the errors that occur - espresso is discounting this as a local problem in the PC - how does line number, character number, "'is_ie' is undefined" or "vB_Text_Editor is null or not an object" or "vB_Editor is undefined" or "'vbphrase' is undefined" or "Expected '}'" or the most common one "Object expected" pertain to my PC?

From my position of poor knowledge, that looks rather more like code in the web page [what does my PC contain about vb or VB or vB unless it came from a webpage? - does VB/vB mean Visual Basic or vBulletin?] and the error properties box confirms it - "Problems with this webpage may prevent it being properly displayed or functioning properly in future."

MSE is a wonderful resource, and as someone already said, we should hardly be complaining, but it would be nice to get to the bottom of this so that everyone can enjoy it as it is intended.
  • hey redux,

We have made some changes this morning hopefully these will help you. i have my fingers crossed that this will help. Thus a ctrl-f5 may help. if you could report back success or not that would be great. (with onspeed on as well)

    Thanks

    MSE Neil

OK I probably can't explain this very well but when you access a webpage, it is downloaded for your browser to display i.e. if when viewing this page, you do View, Source you should see the HTML code necessary to display this page. On the tenth line down, it references a CSS Stylesheet which has been changed and is currently style-4e281d8a-00002.css. If when the HTML code is executed, it can't find or get access to this style sheet, errors will occur and will be displayed by your browser.

Have you tried searching for this style sheet "style-4e281d8a-00002.css" on your PC?
