Just found 3 files in My Web Sites....Windows Explorer/My Computer/Local Disk.
Refers to Moneysavingexpert and by HTTrack Website Copier Open Source Offline Browser on 12th.March at 14.25. Not an expert but the text part mentions 'mirror' and reads like a hoax or virus.
Don't do offline, so I didn't put it there.
Anyway, moved to recycle bin and they will stay there until I know what's going on.
    Access to mse working ok.

This is driving me crazy! I've tried everything suggested and nothing work for long before going back to this awfull display format. The layout is all over the place. The pull-downs don't work.

There's another thread started now http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=209042
so there must be a group of users having this problem and probably many more who do not post to the forum.
Can someone from MSE look into this and maybe suggest a fix. I've tried everything mentioned so far.

In addition, no smilies or formatting (bold, colours, font, etc, sometimes even copy and paste), work when posting or sending PMs - see adjacent thread

This is permanent, whereas the style sheets issue comes and goes, and doesn't always get improved by pressing ctrl-F5

... and a typical error on the page -
" 'vB_Text_Editor' is null or not an object " ; or sometimes it's undefined
  • There seems to be some confusion between Java and Javscript so let me clear up the confusion.

The confusion is compunded because different browsers use different terms to refer to the same technology. In Internet Explorer, they don't use the word Javascript anywhere but rather call it "Active Scripting". Every version of Netscape has had the JavaScript controls in a different place in the preferences system. The article about how to turn Javascript on linked at the bottom incorrectly states that it is called "Java" in Netscape 7. The browser test page also includes some confusion about which one is which however the tests it performs are correct. If it says
Your browser DOES NOT display JavaScript!
then you won't be able to use the smilies buttons here on moneysavingexpert.com.

Javascript (created by Netscape) is what we use to make the smilies work and to show the "Thank you's" in the forums. Javascript is also used extensively in other parts of the forums to enhance the user experience. The forums do work without Javascript but not as well as they do with Javascript turned on.

To the best of my knowledge, Java (created by Sun MicroSystems) is not used at all, anywhere on moneysavingexpert.com.

There are a few reasons why Javascript may not be working for you. Javascript might be turned off or your browser may not understand Javascript properly. There are also several ways to turn Javascript off (or back on) and these vary depending on your browser.

You can test if Javascript is turned on at the browser test page.

Turn on Javascript has a good list of instructions on how to turn Javascript on for several different browsers. If your browser isn't listed there, respond to this post with your browser and version number (available at the top of the browser test page.) and I'll post instructions on how to turn Javascript back on. You can usually also find this information with a Google search for "turn javascript on mybrowser myversion" where mybrowser and myversion are replaced with your browser and it's version number.

Some browsers also allow you to turn Javascript on only for selected sites. This can be a good idea as there are some security issues with Javascript. Adding moneysavingexpert.com and forums.moneysavingexpert.com to your "Trusted sites" will usually allow Javascript to run but not allow it for other sites. Again, different browsers have different methods for achieving this but in Internet Explorer, you will find it in the "Security" tab of "Internet Options".

I hope this helps with the Smilies and thanks problems.

And, more importantly, about adding sites to my browser's Trusted Sites ...

I have none, and when I attempt to add forums.moneysavingexpert.com, I get the message that

" Sites added to this zone must have the https:// prefix. This prefix assures a secure connection. "

In the default Internet zone, looking at the security settings, scripting is enabled except ActiveX controls. I could discuss more of the options there if you wish ...

I have been away for 3 weeks. Nobody has used my PC in the time I have been away, so no settings have been altered or deleted.

So, if any alteration has occurred in the way that MSE reacts with people's browsers, it seems to me more likely to be at your end - for example my [IE6] security settings have ...

Allow scripting of Internet Explorer Webbrowser control
    Disable

It may be that this is not relevant; I would not know. But if you suggest I alter it, I wonder if this setting is there for a reason, set by the various protection programs here, and altering it to allow one website might make others less secure.

To summarise, Javascript is not turned off here, and I suspect not with other people. Plenty of people are having problems, according to this and other threads, plus other people who haven't posted, including a friend on MSN telling me MSE has been awkward for weeks. I don't think it is a likely coincidence that all these people altered their browser settings at once
  • Hey Redux,

can you try going to this page->http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/clientscript/vbulletin_css/style-4e281d8a-00002.css pressing ctrl-f5 and then comming back to the site. this will hopefully load the style sheet into your browser cache. It is still likely that the stylesheet has been incorrectly cached. As for thanks buttons etc there is nothing that we have done this end that I believe would impact them. Can you confirm that you havent recently changed/upgraded any firewall/anti virus packages on your pc?

    Thanks

I have exactly the same problem as redux with formatting and smilies. I used to have problems with the Thanks button as it used to jump to the top of the page instead of thanking someone. That works at the moment though. I also had the same problem others complained of where the whole forum went weird.Almost every page has a "Done but with errors on the page" message - the error as redux described.I have not changed my browser's settings or anything else for that matter. Everything used to work perfectly on MSE - now it doesn't.
