hmmm it looks confusing, and i'm a brunette :rotfl:
best bet is to switch the pc on, right click the 'my computer' icon and goto 'properties'
that will tell you the spec of your machine in English :beer:0 -
Missfrugal, you definitely have a 3.0GB Pentium 4 processor in the box, presumably this is a Dimension 3100 machine (i.e. does the box have a big hole across the front? and is very quiet?)
You also have 512MB of dual channel memory (pretty good), a 160GB SATA disk drive (pretty good), 16x DVD+-/RW (very good), a modem (hardly worth having these days), a USB optical mouse (OK but not fantastic) and a standard Dell keyboard (OK). You should also have Works 2005 which is a pretty good little package. If you look down the list of things on the Dell website link all the items with a "1" next to them are what is actually inside your box.
You also have 2.5 years left to run on a next-day onsite warranty which is also very useful, especially if you know very little about PCs.
All in all for £170 I think that's a pretty good deal, and you should be quite happy with it. The only failing is that it uses on-board graphics, and because it is a Dimension 3000 you can't add the most modern graphics cards so you won't be able to play the latest 3D games very well.
If you want to check what specification your machine has one of the easiest ways is to turn it on, then choose Start>Run and type DXDIAG in the box. This shows you a lot of information about your machine, including on the first tab what sort of processor and how much memory you have. Don't change anything on these screens and choose EXIT when you've finished, without saving any changes. You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -
littlemissfrugal... Your system essentials are :
Dimension 3000
Next Business Day Warranty until 24/10/2008
Pentium 4 3.0Ghz (good)
2x256Mb RAM (sufficient)
160Gb Hard Drive (good)
Fax Modem
DVD Writer 16x (good)
For £169.99 you won't get a Pentium 4 anywhere else at this price - especially with the warranty. Admittedly the 5100 would have been a better bet for expandability but for everyday computing (i.e. non game playing) I don't really think you can go wrong at that price. The processor and the XP software would cost you that on their own if you were to buy them separately.
Edit : Biglugs beat me to it - but I would say it is a 3000 not a 3100.0 -
If you've got the old style 3000 it will be in a solid dark grey case without the big gap across the front. If you have the newer style case it will have a big gap and be MUCH quieter.
I didn't think Dell did 3GB P4s in the old Dimension 3000s though?You don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0 -
thanks for all your quick replies - off to work for a little while - will plug it in when i get home and let you all know..
it definately says 3000 on the unit and looks like the 3000 on BT's website
3D game playing isn't a prob as tetris is about my level
once again thanks eversoi'm living in a parallel universe0 -
Got my system delivered today...not the Dell 3000 but the HP unit....only 6 days late from when they said they would deliver...However; they have refunded my postage due to the delay so I've actually got the same system which dabs are selling at the mo ( http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3ZG2 ) for £210.55 inc vat + postage for £129.99 so not a bad resultWelcome, rogerramjet.

Ain't money saving grand?! If only I had some real use for all these PCs I keep buying, but at least all of my kids can play online games without fighting over the same machine.... sorry, I mean at least my kids can all do their really important homework without fighting over the same machineYou don't get medals for sitting in the trenches.0

Dumb question - does the spec on this machine look familiar? Is it the same as the £329 machine?
Aren't Dabs and BT the same company now and if so why are they not shipping these to the people who ordered and didn't receive?
