Not Tiny, Not Courageous, but definitely in debt

Hi everyone.
I've been lurking and occasionally posting for ages now. Posted an SOA ages ago. I'm kind of happy where I am outgoings wise. There are places I could cut down but I'm being realistic, I'm not going to make myself miserable by cutting out of all of luxuries otherwise I wouldn't last 5 minutes! I'm lucky because I can afford my debts. I just hate having them.

In January this year I owed £13,000. I now owe £11,000 approx. It would be less but unfortunately I have a numpty OH who has a DMP and a gambling problem. He went to GA and they told him he hadn't hit rock bottom yet so they couldn't help. Heaven forbid people should want help before it all goes pear shaped! But anyway, we're getting there. After too many second chances he knows this is it. He's just paid off all of the pay day loans, all he has to pay now is the mortgage and DMP and anything left I get. I pay all the rest of the bills. I don't mind this, because it's about equal to the mortgage anyway.

His DMP is 7 years, 1 year done. I have 1 year left on 2 loans, and then credit cards, so realistically I'll be debt free in 2 years. Hopefully less. The plan is then wedding then kids. I've been blogging for a while but no one reads it so I figured here is the best place to keep me on track.

As an aside, my username is from my favourite song, Who Would Have Thought by Darren Hayes "Who would have thought the tiny courageous?"

I'm also hoping to lose weight through moneysaving, like I'll take soup into work instead of sandwiches, and I'm exercising at home because it's free.

I guess it's all connected. i want to declutter too. I guess having too much stuff is a sign of money wasted on crap. I just wish it was stuff worth ebaying!

A lot has changed. Wedding and baby, debt down to sub £6k. In the spirit of a positive outlook, I've changed the name of the diary to a song that could pretty much be my theme tune

  • Not had much sleep because just before I went to bed I heard the news about Stephen Gately and it was one of those things that really preys on the mind, I think because he's so close in age to me - really makes you appreciate your own mortality. Feeling quite good considering the amount of wine I drank last night though!

Plan today is to tackle the ironing mountain that has sprung up in the kitchen.

    Good luck with your diary.

Everything is worth ebaying if you were going to throw it out anyway! Start it off at 99p and see how it goes. I've had some really obscure things sell....one man's trash is another man's treasure and all that. :)

Hi tiny_courageous - just wanted to say I am in the same amount of debt now that you were in last year. It's good to see you've reduced it and so there's hope for me! My OH doesn't grasp the concept of managing money at times and thinks it's a never-ending supply that doesn't need to be budgetted. I think I might finally be getting through to him though. Keep going - I look forward to reading your updates.

Just listened to the Darren Hayes track on you tube, it's great.

All the best on your journey.
I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.
