If this is a recent development, do a system restore.

I use the classic look on the start menu and when you click on the windows icon - bottom left - it is just above shut down, but if you are using the other view just type "run" - without the quotes - in the search box at the bottom and it will appear in the results list at the top0

Thanks Julie, just going to try something, will post back.
Closed - System restore is only available from 06/10/09 This has been a problem for a while just got round to sorting it!0 -
No it didn't work???? Any idea??? Feel free to ask me to check the simple things......0

you need to follow the instructions in post #7 on that link I posted, there is no mention of "run" just copy, paste, save & double click then restart.0

Enigma I followed the instructions as posted see below
After saving the file, go to START > RUN > and type 'regedit' and then click OK
In the registry, select FILE > IMPORT and select the "missing.reg" file from your desktop
You should get a confirmation that it was imported successfully.
Got the confirmation message to say successful, but no sound!0 -

have you re booted your pc, if so just double click the missing.reg file on your desktop then ok then reboot.0

also you say in an earlier post that system restore isn't working properly, is there anything else that is not working as it could be your pc is infected with a virus or malware, which is changing the behavior of the pc. It may be worthwhile to download and run malwarebytes and superantispyware plus hijackthis, instructions for these are posted throughout this forum then post the logs on here for one of the experts to have a look at.0

Julie, that didn't work. Could it be something really simple I am not doing, dare i ask!!??
Enigma - I have Avira and ran a full scan yesterday and only had two warnings, nothing else. I don't have any problems with anything else that I have come across.0
