I wouldn't dismiss getting them from the US. I ordered my wedding dress from US and it was much cheaper than buying one to my specifications over here. It didn't take any longer either as wedding and bridesmaid dresses seem to have long lead times in this country.

I think this one is gorgeous and quite cheap:

Shipping at this store is only $28 so quite reasonable too.

    Here's another lovely one:

Thank you. Added to the list.

What a great idea for a thread, and I'm so glad it was included in the weekly email as I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

I have the added problem of being 6' tall, so I need a longer leg length, but quite often find that where trousers are offered in different lengths, this stops at size 18 or 20 - do manufactures think all plus size people are average height?

Another provider of plus sizes that I don't think has been mentioned is Sixteen 47 - Dawn French and Helen Teague's range - I like the fact that they advertise big clothes for women, rather than clothes for big women.

Also, for taller, plus sized women, Long Tall Sally have increased their size range on some trousers and jeans, up to size 22. They're quite pricey but their clothes are very good quality and bargains can be found in the sales.

Thanks to the OP for this thread. :T

    LL :)

It used to be one of my favourites, particularly when sold in Evans.
I bought something a couple of years ago and I was horrified. I purchased an expensive suit and when it came it was a skirt and a half-buttoned top, in light-weight fabric, definitely not a jacket! The quality was extremely poor, the fabric and the workmanship, the items were not lined, the stitching was bad.
I had the time I would have reported them to Trading Standards under the Goods Descriptions Act.
They used to have a shop in North London. They now have a dodgy address in Leytonstone, if you look it up on Google Street View you'll know what I mean!

How did you find their clothes Lois?
Has anyone else used them recently?

I wonder if anyone could help me with a problem I'm having? I'm a size 26/28 top and 22/24 bottom (depending on where I buy from). My sister has just asked me to be her bridesmaid next year (the diet starts next week!). I'm finding it impossible to find a plus-sized bridesmaid dress in the UK.

I had a similar problem when I was getting married except in trying to find a wedding dress. Even the bridal shops that did sell larger size dresses only kept two sizes to try - something around a 14 was typical. I usually had to put the dress on and have the back held tight with elastic bands! Fortunately I did find a beautiful dress in the end.

From memory though I think there was a range called Alfred Angelo that did plus size bridesmaid dresses. I'm sure they had some that weren't strapless as that would have put me off too. Googling them they say they can from UK8 to UK32W and there are 55 colour options.

Also, just Googling I also came across Plus Size Bridal .co.uk that seemed to have a fair selection of different designs too. Sorry, I'm still too new to post links but if you Google the names the sites should come up.

However, for our wedding, to save money and to make sure we got something we liked, we had a friend of a friend make the bridesmaids outfits. We got a pattern - there are several plus size ranges too - and then she just whipped them all up. I had five bridesmaids ranging from a size 6 to a 22. The design we were able to go with flattered all of them - rather than it looking like some were forced to wear this to accommodate the others.

Let us know when you find something. :-)
  • Evans has gone very 'trendy' had a look at the website and can't find anything for me anymore : (
Heading towards 50 at a rate of knots, 5'1", size 20, love black and simple clothes not too sure who Beth thingie is....they need a new range, for grumpy old women (went to M&S, lots of goodies to be had there).

my big one is jeans, i really need a few more pairs but i'm loathe to buy without trying on for reasons mentioned above with my waist/thigh ratio.... anyone have any suggestions?

I have found Yours can be good for jeans but then again I was able to try on and buy them directly from the store in Bury St Edmunds before they closed down.

The pairs I got were the first jeans not to gape at the back and still have plenty of room around the thighs (my most problematic area for trousers). There was also no elasticated sections in the waistband. They did three leg lengths (S/M/L) which was handy for little me. The particular design seemed to keep coming back in store every season with just a slightly different pattern on the back pocket and several shades of blue to choose from.

They still have a fair few stores dotted about the place which are listed on their website. If you can get to one of those it may be worth a look or maybe take a chance on line. I'll be looking myself as I have worn mine out and need to get some new ones. :cheesy:

i have for years not bought new clothes, I hate clothes shopping.
I have recently found a web site which has human size clothes at a single mum size price. And with 10% off your first order and free postage on an order over £60 I was delighted.

I have now rekitted out my wardrobe from top to toe. Cheaply and I now look fab!!

The website is all the w's yoursclothing dot co dot uk

    Have a look and see!

Betty 'thingy' is actually quite edgy for a high street store that's not known for being at the cutting edge of fashion... She's a singer in a rock band, alternative in may ways. I love her, she's a daring woman, she has even posed naked (click here) for NME. Great role model!
  • Okey dokey point taken but not a good look for someone in their 40s.....

ehm... I'm over 40... and I have bought one of the tops. I would not say I'm very edgy myself but I like it (although it shrunk and it doesn't cover my tummy and bum too well now  - not Betty's fault though :D )

There should be enough choice for all of us lovely large ladies, whatever we want to wear.
Sounds like Ann Harvey may be more for you, not cheap but great quality and great sales. They have one on right now.
  • I like good materials (no syns) and well cut clothes (not keen on patterns) used to love Jean Muir clothes (if you remember her) but could never afford them! I've found some things in M&S, sort of outside of mainstream, not 'aged' but classics - like trenchcoats etc (if you see ....) Totally agree that their should be more choice (don't start me on shoes or we'll be here all night)....M
