  • Hi
If you prepared to travel a couple of times you could try the shop i used in newcastle under lyme / stoke on trent called J and J design who were very reasonably priced and willing to alter etc inc adding sleeves etc again at a reasonable price.
    Hope that helps

I am fed up of manufacturers assuming that everyone that is a plus size has a negative waist , also I hadn't heard of Elvi going under - that is the only place where as a size 26 I could get trousers to fit (most of the time I have to seriously take the waist in as you could get another person in there!)

i have a similar problem to you as i genuinely do have an hourglass figure (i just wish my hourglass was a bit smaller!)

even when i was thin i had problems with waists as i'm quite muscular so if trousers fit in the thighs the waist was always too big and would chafe from rubbing me as i walked.

i've gotten to be a dab hand and making little pleats on the side and discreetly sewing them in place however i really wish i didn't have to do this

i also have a bit problem with evans shirts. most of them are quite low cut and i've never been proportionally large in the chest so getting it to fit in the hips but not make me look like a brazen hussy is a challenge with them!

thanks so much to the OP for starting this thread, i'm really in need of some new clothing and i'm quite fed up with evans, honestly there has been almost nothing i'd want to put on from their line in the last 5 years and my wardrobe sadly shows this by so many thread bare clothes!

my big one is jeans, i really need a few more pairs but i'm loathe to buy without trying on for reasons mentioned above with my waist/thigh ratio.... anyone have any suggestions? also i really can't stand hipsters and so many places still insist on selling these... honestly even on skinny people they look horrible so WHY would a heavy woman want to wear them?

Fantastic to see a thread on this! I'm 5"8 and a size 28/30/32 depending on where you shop, except most of the time you don't because it's a nightmare! Agree that Anne Harvey is lovely if not a little pricey (sale stickers only!) and that Evans have gone so far downhill they're off my horizon.

However, I would like to mention Sainsbury's Grace range - clothes up to a fairly generous 28 and often longer in style. Recent purchases include vest tops @ £3 each, Tracky bottoms @ £7, Good work trousers @ £9 and lots of tunic style tops & cardi's for £12, and these are not sale prices.

    * Plus points - Lovely clothes, shaped very well, and very reasonable prices, plus the usual supermarket no-quibble returns policy

    * Down sides - It's a devil to find! Not many stores stock it, sometimes when they do and you visit regularly they then switch it for the Petite range or some other line - I phoned head office and asked for a list of stores that stocked it - they didn't know (?!?) so I phoned all the North West ones myself. Stockport, Huddersfield & the one next to Cheshire Oaks outlet village are my regular haunts, but always phone the store first, and don't assume that because a particular store is large they will stock it.

Thanks for all the other links! :p

My bug at the moment is I cant find womens cycling clothes above a size 18 ( I need size 22). Are larger women not suppose to cycle? My average rides are around 40 miles.
Dont worry, I'm not expecting to fit my butt into a pair of tight cycling shorts, that would be unfair on local traffic:eek:, but surley with the increase of bike sales there must be a demand to varying clothes sizes.
I did find one American site aerotechdesigns.com , however, by the time you had psotage and import charges a pair of shorts and top will cost around £80.
    I HATE WEARING MENS GEAR!

I wonder if anyone could help me with a problem I'm having? I'm a size 26/28 top and 22/24 bottom (depending on where I buy from). My sister has just asked me to be her bridesmaid next year (the diet starts next week!). I'm finding it impossible to find a plus-sized bridesmaid dress in the UK. Most of the ones I've seen are strapless, which is no good for me as I need to wear an industrial-strength bra :o and the strapless bras don't go up to my size.

I really love the "modest" style bridesmaid dresses that you can get from the USA (for example these), but don't really want to order from the US because of all the extra costs involved etc. I need a floor-length, chocolate brown bridesmaid dress, preferably A-line style with sleeves and I can't find one in the UK anywhere online. Does anyone have any ideas? I think my sister is wishing she hadn't asked me now and got one of her thin friends to do it instead! If I can't find anything I think I'll have to say I can't do it and just let my daughter be her bridesmaid instead.
I wouldn't dismiss getting them from the US. I ordered my wedding dress from US and it was much cheaper than buying one to my specifications over here. It didn't take any longer either as wedding and bridesmaid dresses seem to have long lead times in this country.

I think this one is gorgeous and quite cheap:

Shipping at this store is only $28 so quite reasonable too.

    Here's another lovely one:

    - - c'mon - what's wrong with making your bridesmaids dress? - - or getting a dressmaker to do it? Shop bought ones are way expensive, and materials are not that dear. Your sister and you can find a pattern, and even if it doesn't come in your size, a competent dressmaker should be ablet o size it up and fit it just for you. Ask around for costings - you may be surprised!

What a great idea for a thread, and I'm so glad it was included in the weekly email as I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

I have the added problem of being 6' tall, so I need a longer leg length, but quite often find that where trousers are offered in different lengths, this stops at size 18 or 20 - do manufactures think all plus size people are average height?

Another provider of plus sizes that I don't think has been mentioned is Sixteen 47 - Dawn French and Helen Teague's range - I like the fact that they advertise big clothes for women, rather than clothes for big women.

Also, for taller, plus sized women, Long Tall Sally have increased their size range on some trousers and jeans, up to size 22. They're quite pricey but their clothes are very good quality and bargains can be found in the sales.

Thanks to the OP for this thread. :T

  • My experience of clothes shopping has improved greatly over the years. It used to be that big people had to wear unfashionable clothing and travel a long way to get it. Today I do most of my clothes shopping on the internet and only shop in person for those things that may not fit or that are too bulky or expensive to post.
My current favourites are Sizedwell at wwwdotsizedwelldotcodotuk who offer a really good and personal service and they have a really large shop in Rayleigh Essex; and Cotton Traders at wwwdotcottontradersdotcodotuk who have shops all over but don't always have the larger sizes in stock in their stores. If you are on the Cotton Traders mailing list they send regular special offers by e-mail. I saved £44 against their RRP on two orders of four items this week using a 50% off offer on one and free postage on the other. I could have got a free waterproof jacket worth £25 if I'd have made a third order but I was afraid it wouldn't fit over my bum!
