    Hi Jon and welcome back!

If GrammarGirl's back later she'll be able to help you as she's from that neck of the woods.

Thanks Goan! I'm a big fan of your blog by the way, I love seeing all the retrotastic things you pick up, always brightens up my day (it needs brightening up at the moment- I've sold out [only for three months, thankfully] and got an office job to make some extra cash- and being behind a desk is really not my ideal way to spend a day). I did think GrammarGirl might be nearby, as I saw (too late, alas!) that she'd posted about a vintage fair in Leeds.

Jon - I can't imagine you in an office at all, you're so wonderfully creative. I love your illustrations. Hopefully the cash you're earning will help your career in the right direction.

PS Today's blog entry is rather sad, a vintage diary I found at a jumble sale.

Hi Jesa. I wondered how things were going with your Dad as I hadn't seen you post for a long while.
Isn't it beautifully written? It astounded me when I first found it having always mistakenly believed that housemaids weren't well educated.

My thoughts and love are with you.

    Hey folks!

I haven't posted on this thread for ages, but I have been lurking, keeping an eye on all your chazzalicious bargains. Just wondering if anyone knew of any good car boot sales/ charity shop hotspots in the Leeds area? I've just recently moved here to work for a few months, but know nothing about the area (or this part of the world more generally, but plan to do some exploring!), and as I don't know anyone here either, I'll have to keep myself occupied seeking out vintage tat. If anyone knows the area, any advice'd be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Jon

Hi Jon! I'm here and indeed in the Leeds area. I live in North Leeds and there's an abundance of great second hand hot spots around me. Car boot wise, there's the Otley car boot which is on every Sunday throughout the year from 12-4pm. A favourite of mine as it doesn't require an early start! There's also the huge car boot just near Leeds/Bradford airport which starts again at the end of March - Sundays 6.30am-1pm. Fab if you can manage to get there early!

For charity shops, St Gemma's Hospice is my favourite (there are two in North Leeds) and the Hospice itself holds a vintage fair as you saw in my previous post. It's worth registering for the newsletter on their website to find out about that kind of stuff.

The Headingley/Hyde Park area is good for vintage stuff too - plenty of charity shops (Martin's House is my favourite, and the Oxfam Bookshop is good too) and vintage shops along with retro boutiques and antique homewares.

Something I've just discovered that I'm really loving is yelp.co.uk - there are quite a few great reviews of vintage shops and fairs on there if you have a search about.

Hope that's useful! Feel free to PM me if you'd like any more info on Leeds in general. :)

  • my best bargins are probably two items I got from charity shops ages ago - 1) a dvd of the complete Roobarb and Custard for @2.50 now out of print and going for £24.99 upwards and 2) the LP of Picaresque by the Decemberists that only cost a pound and I've just managed to sell in on amazon for £8.99
