Goanmad - I read the book you recommended on your blog (Alligators, Old Mink & New Money) and really enjoyed it.

Just read this book and really enjoyed it. It just makes me want to go jumbling all the more - thanks for the recommendation!

Last year I brought a Tommy Hilfiger Handbag in car boot - thought it looked dated and fake on return and put in cupboard.

Took it out today and not sure. It seems to be made of green crocodile skin no obvious logo on outside; the small studs have name on but large handle rings do not (as on later handbags of similar size); also hidden logo shape without words in texture on one side near bottom (not front or back so very difficult to spot). Inside it has the Tommy Hilfiger corporate logo (not normal clothes logo).

When I searched could not find anything similar but did find newspaper ref to 1998 woman range (on sell in 3 stores only) that mentioned a £2000 plus green crocodile skin handbag. I also found a picture in a 1998 magazine of a pair of suede trousers from the range and they are the same shade of green.

Here is a magazine link to the 1998 trousers (see picture 4): http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=-P0DAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA16

Anyhow I have put it back in the cupboard as I understand an expert will be able to tell if it is crocodile skin or stamped leather and the quality of the crocodile skin used so guess I can get it checked at some point.

I still think it looks like a (brought on holiday) cheap fake but if I didn't know better I might think the same of the outfit being worn in this picture from the same year: http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=9doDAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA101 and the man in the photo is Tommy Hilfiger himself. I guess it is hard to look at recent times with an objective eye when something looks out-dated but before it becomes retro chic.
  • can you post a pic of it?

I will try next week - not done pics on here before and I think it will need day light to show up well.

However it does look very similar to one below but make and shape are different and slightly lighter colour:

EDIT: There are a lot of cheap Tommy Hilfiger Crocodile Handbags on ebay.com not the same but they only sell for $10.

  • Got lots of bargains in a charity shop by work. I got a looks like new Asda top (jumper with floaty sleeves effect) a Next one that looks new and a red long sleeved t shirt from M & S that was new with tags all 3 for £6.50. The man on the till said his neighbour donated 4 binbags of clothes and they were all new/like new. She must be loaded. Hope she carries on though as Im thrilled and so is the charity (local hospice).

Went to a charity shop where I live and they had a sale. 3 items for £2.50 as they had an excess of stock. I got a Peacocks skirt, M & S top and Next jumper.

Some charity shops do overprice some things I think. They have got more savvy over labels and what sells. Still cheaper than the highstreet though. I havnt bought any new from a shop clothes for months (except undies)
I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round

Some much better than others...however today I popped in, even though there is already too much month left at the end of the money 'just to look', as you do hehe. Could have easily bought LOADS as lots of lovely things but had to hold myself back due to funds or lack of (and the fact it was really icey so wanted to leave a hand free of bags in case of a slip!)
