  • A quick tour through charity shops at the weekend produced a Murano glass duck, oure 1950s (£3), an out-of-print book I've been looking for (£1) and a "star buy" - a Viyella Travelrobe (£2) - a men's dressing gown, 1950s in a gorgeous mainly burgundy and dark blue Paisley print. Great condition, and has washed beautifully! But it's redolent of the days of cabin trunks and porters - it weighs enough to compromise your Ryanair baggage allowance!

Welcome back! I'm loving the sound of the maxi dress - envy!!!
Lucille Manguin died in 1960 so I'd say most likely the fifties era as Lewis's became an established chain in 1954 and would have had the buying power to establish it's own fashion labels.

Great find. Old ladies always have the best stuff!

They certainly do have the best stuff... not sure where she gets it from though.
I thought the same as you because of when she died etc it does have a bit of a fusty smell not sure how to get it out... will dry claening help??? i tried it on and it fits me perfectly... I luckily have a tiny waist and boobs because all the vintage stuff is definitely not for anyone with a thick waist!!

Just back for a bit of a root around the CS's in town before all the festie people start arriving. Not much but a Geek Chic 80's sweater with batwings in mustard for £3.

Got DD a Hello Kitty duvet cover and pillowcase in a CS today for 4.50. Currently in washing machine, she cant wait to use it.

Got DS a shirt and trousers for 1.00.

Might have a day and go further afield for a CS shopping day.

Vintage stuff fits much better, doesn't it? Probably because it was well-made and not hugely mass produced (and women wore corsets hence the small waists).

Dry cleaning should shift the "fusty" smell. If I'm strapped for cash I pop some essential oil on a muslin cloth, let it dry and pop the offending item and the cloth into the tumble dryer on a delicate setting for 10 minutes.

I bought a job lot of stuff from Ebay to re-sell at carboot sales. In the bottom of one of the boxes was a nice-looking presentation box, inside of which were 5 solid silver Marshall Islands coins. They may not be of any monetary value outside their country of origin, but I got £8 each for scrap.

The job lot only cost me £51.00 so only have to make another £11 to gain a profit.

Yeah vintage stuff just suits my body shape i suppose. I think all the apple shaped people nowadays would struggle to fit in it though:).

Thanks for the tip about the tumble drying - might give it a go now.
