We like pasta and beans. Cook some pasta, heat some baked beans and add some chilli powder, mix the two together and top with grated cheese. My kids love this, I first made it when doing Slimming World.

    Excellent thread!!

haha we had this last night, we put the mash in the middle of the plate, make a well and fill it with beans. My mum used to drag a fork around the outside of the mash and it became known as birds nest pie :p

ooh just thought of another. I love the sausage bean and cheese melt pasties from Greggs, so I rolled out (pre made and packaged) pastry, lined the base with grated cheese threw in a tin of beans, more cheese, sprinkled sausages sliced up over the top, more cheese and put a pastry lid on.

Not exactly calorie friendly but flippin tasty and warming on a cold evening.

    Hubby loves it!!!

My favourite lazy dinner is spaghetti carbonara:

Boil kettle for pasta and cook spag as fast as you can, chop some bacon and fry in some garlic and butter. Beat an egg, a splosh of cream, salt and pepper and handful of grated cheese in a big bowl. When the pasta is done, drain and bung it into eggy mixture, add the sizzling hot fried bacon and the butter and mix it all up - eat asap.

The heat of the pasta and bacon cooks the egg just enough, but if you're a bit worried of raw eggs, zap it in micro for a few seconds, but not too much or you get scrambled egg and spaghetti.

If I'm not so much in a rush I also fry some onions and/or mushrooms with the bacon.

Bacon & Pea Pasta - Add some pasta to some boiling water (I like the little shells), while thats boiling I cook a few rashers of bacon in the microwave until it's quite crispy.

A few minutes before the pasta is cooked chuck in a handful of frozen peas, when the pasta is ready drain it then stick it back in the pan. Add a few dollops of philadelphia type cream cheese (I like onion & chive flavour) and a dollop of creme fraise, break or cut the bacon into pieces, add it to the pasta and give it all a good stir. Serve with grated parmesan.

Tasty & easy, only takes 10-15 minutes depending on the pasta.

Bronnie - I contacted Patak's and got this reply:

Good morning and thank you for your enquiry.

Our advice on the label for consumers is “It is important that this product is not consumed uncooked” this is because Patak’s pastes are made with unprocessed spices. Spices naturally contain some bacteria which remain dormant and harmless in the dry spices.
Some companies process their spices to reduce the number of these bacteria, but others, including ourselves do not, as the process used can affect the flavour of the spices. The recipes used here at Patak’s ensure that the curry pastes remain safe and retain a superior flavour through not being processed.
When mixed with other foods uncooked the bacteria may have chance to multiply and it is therefore necessary to cook the combined food and paste as directed on the label to ensure the final dish remains free from live bacteria.

Our advice to you would be:
    • Follow the instructions on the label and thoroughly cook the product.
    • If you do decide to continue using the raw paste mixed with cold foodstuffs (i.e. cooked chicken), ensure the food is completely cold and once you have combined the paste with the food, store in the refrigerator and eat within 4 hours.

I hope you fine this information useful.

  • Veggie club sandwich

Toast 3 slices of bread until warmed and just starting to colour

One the first slice spread hummus and top with crisp lettuce
For the second slice spread one side with chutney and lay face down on top of the first slice, then top the other side with cream cheese, sliced cheddar and cucumber.
Top with the remaining slice and chop in half on the diagonal.

My favourite sandwich ever and only a few mins to prepare!

    cheesey pasta

cook pasta. While pasta is cooking fry off some chopped bacon/pancetta and some chopped courgettes. Add grated cheese and creme fraiche, stir until you get a creamy sauce. No precise measurements as I go by taste! Drain pasta, top with cheesey mix and black pepper

    Well, you live and learn!

I've been doing this for at least 15 years and fortunately have managed not to poison my family and friends

However I'm pretty sure this warning hasn't been on the jar that long

Interesting too that although Pataks give this warning, they also do make the assumption that people (like me) will be expecting to be able to use it uncooked ;) and give advice on consuming it safely when uncooked, which would mean my Coronation Chicken recipe would still be OK if you followed this part of Patak's instructions.

There is a thread here discussing this very question. Some interesting points raised, including that of legal-back-covering:rolleyes:

    http://ask.metafilter.com/41544/Why-must-I-cook-Pataks-Curry-Paste

I have always assumed that pastes have already been cooked off, the advantage of using them being that the spice was cooked and not 'raw' as it would be if you added, for example curry or chilli powder directly.

I expect the paste could be fried off in a little oil for the requisite time before adding to my dish (not very lazy recipe though!), but you might as well just fry off some curry powder instead then and produce your own paste, it would be cheaper. I wonder if other brands have a similar warning? Will check next time I go shopping and report back!

    Thanks for the follow-up anyway!

I've noticed quite a few pasta lazy tasty recipes and thought I'll share a MSE tip when cooking pasta. bring the pot of water up to the boil, add a drop of oil and a pinch of salt, add in pasta, stir it round and wait for it to come back to boil, stir again, lid on, heat off. I usually add about 2 mins or so to the recommended cooking time using this fuel saving method and the pasta is cooked to perfection. test it when the time is up, if its not cooked enough for your taste, put the lid back on and wait for another 2 mins and so forth. Works only with pasta shapes obviously, not spag or any of the long types. sometimes I chuck in a handful of frozen peas/sweetcorn at the same time (before bringing it up to boil for the last time) and the residue heat in the pot of water is enough to defrost and cook them thru by the time the pasta is cooked.
