So do you know why they are ditching Electron and replacing it with a full authorisation Visa Debit? My guess (as you probably read in my reply to simax on the other thread) is perhaps it's something to do with the wider acceptance of Visa Debit cards. Although I thought the only issue with Electrons was they required an online terminal, so if an online Visa Debit acts the same, surely it will face the same problems (like your example of Pay@Pump)?Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0 -

I have a HSBC Plus account with no CGC as HSBC no longer issue them.
They do if you ask mate - and if you had one before the replacement card

Sure I know mate, its because Visa Debit is recognised worldwide and offers greater flexibility when requiring access to funds. Basically, its easier to streamline and a lot of lenders that had Electron still do (HBOS/Abbey) - its mainly those switching from Solo/Maestro that are giving full auth cards.
Regards to pay at pumps, the normal bank card (like maestro) would not be authorised as you can go overdrawn on a full bank account, you cannot on a basic account thus a basic account would issue a full auth card.
Similarly, if you had a full bank account with overdraft but did not qualify for a bank card then you'd get a full auth card (i.e. electron./solo equivalent)....
You following me yet matey lol
Think like this, electron couldn't be used in an old manual swipe machine - an embossed connect card, could.

I didn't know that.
When i got my card through the post, the panthlet stated that they were phasing out all HSBC CG cards. So i assumed you could not have CGC anymore.0 -

If you had one on your Maestro then yes, you get it on the new Visa one (they sent my visa plus without it and I rung and got a new one with it sent out).....
Just ring and say, you want the CGC element as you still use it in certain shops, I used to have it on my maestro and now I cannot pay when I dont have cash so please reissue and they will.
