  • but how will this effect banks like NATWEST who issue 2 types of Visa Debit cards, the FULL card and the ALL AUTH card, will everyone after June 2011 have ALL AUTH cards or will they only issue FULL cards and just trust the customer not to go overdrawn etc.

All banks, i.e. every bank, offer the 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 card. Not exclusive to natwest (who are in fact one of the last to do it!)

3-1 card is better than 2-1 debit card for sure, 3-1 debit card are usually for people who have a good credit history or managed their account well over a certain period. It is very practical having 3-1 card because you will not be in a situation where some merchants will not accept payment simply because it is full authorisation debit card. Like train guards with their ticket machine is offline for example.

Although the status-quo is for a 3-in-1 debit card to be offline, you can still have a 2-in-1 offline debit card. I understand the point you are making that 3-in-1's are always offline, but the cheque guarantee function has no effect on the authorisation type of the debit card.

The term 3-in-1 simply explains the triple functionality of the card: ATM card, debit card and cheque guarantee card.

When the cheque guarantee function is removed, all debit cards will technically become 2-in-1 (ATM card and debit card).
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

Exactly mate. The best description is the card will not work on planes, trains or automobiles (i.e. on board a plane, on board the train or at unmanned petrol pumps such as tesco pay at pump)...

These are the main 3 downsides of full auth cards

Yes mate but you'll still have the 2 types; i.e. Full Auth & Bank Card :D

  • most people don't manage to keep their cards that long, anyway.

not sure what you mean by that, can you please explain, do you mean they lose them or they mismanage their affairs and have them taken back by the bank......

Normally I would say Electrons help differentiate between online and offline cards, but I've read on here that some banks issue online Visa Debit cards? Madness.

Yes mate most the banks are doing it now, HSBC, Lloyds, Barclays, Co-Op, RBS etc etc - basically when CGC goes in 2011 it'll be fun!

You'll get the 2-in-1 (Full Auth) or the 2-in-1 (Bank Card), suffice to say the Full Auth will be a direct replacement for the old Solo/Electron cards and those not allowed to go overdrawn (basic accounts) - these need authorising at POS or will decline. Thus they won't work on a plane or train or at petrol pay @ pumps cos they are all offline terminals. The Bank Cards (i.e. offline cards) will be like the current CGC card, i.e. will let you spend even if the terminal cannot authorise the transaction.

Makes sense here - most people do not retain their cards for the full term. For instance if it gets tatty, the numbers fade, your signature strip fails etc etc - a host of reasons!

He was not being arsey implying people get them retained by the bank (paranoia lol) :rotfl:

  • I think its about time that the CG facility is scrapped. I for one would never accept a cheque from anyone, with or without a CG card.

I have a HSBC Plus account with no CGC as HSBC no longer issue them.
