    I cannot believe that some folk are saying that they will be glad to see the back of CG Cards, Why ??

    (a ) They don't cost the user anything and;

    (b) They can be useful on occasions.

    I have a long standing HSBC £250 CG Card that is due to expire next year, I am dreading having it replaced with a Visa Card, 'cos I will then incur charges for buying currency online, a charge that isn't made on my Maestro Card.:mad:

  • Makes sense here - most people do not retain their cards for the full term. For instance if it gets tatty, the numbers fade, your signature strip fails etc etc - a host of reasons!

    He was not being arsey implying people get them retained by the bank (paranoia lol) :rotfl:

    I must be the exception here as my cards seem to go through the full term except many years ago when my bag was stolen, now I must try to keep my paranoia in check:eek::D

    You may find that your existing HSBC Maestro debit card is replaced long before you expect. My First Direct Maestro debit card wasn't due to expire until August next year, but I received a letter from them about ten days ago saying it will be replaced now, and the new Visa debit card arrived yesterday. If First Direct are replacing cards early then I'm sure the parent bank, HSBC, will be doing the same.

    RBS and NatWest are also planning to replace all their Maestro debit cards with Visa ones before the end of the year, no matter what the expiry date on the existing cards. It seems like all the banks want rid of Maestro ASAP.

    This outdated system needed removing. It will cut down on fraud too as no longer will customers be able to go to a local cheque cashing place and guarantee multiple cheques for which they haven't the funds to honour under normal circumstances.
    I'm certainly not sorry that these companies will no longer get their commissions for such transactions.

    Who are you buying your currency from that will charge you more for using a Visa Debit than a Maestro? :confused:

    A monopoly is where a business controls so much of any given market, product etc. that they can either prevent or significantly control access there-to by other businesses or individuals.

    Visa doesn't have a monopoly because they don't control the UK debit card market, or attempt to. Their adoption has been due to them offering a better product than Maestro/Solo does.

    If they had a monopoly, they would be able to stop Mastercard Debit from being implemented, amongst other things. The fact that your product is used by the majority of the market does not necessarily imply a monopoly.

    Or possibly a better deal for the banks, we all know how greedy they are.:rolleyes:
