    I just have... i didnt find one that made a charge.. Only a friendly warning that you MAY get a charge from your bank.

    This is the same warning as your bank MAY charge you for using a cash machine where the provider doesnt charge. I havent found hardly any that do that either.

    Aren't the best rates from people who only accept bank transfers, anyway?

    Just what I thought was the case.. If you are paying my Maestro I cant think of a good reason why you wouldnt just BACs is anyway. :confused:

    The best news of all is that I bought my US dollars for a much nicer rate a couple of months ago as thought they might tumble a little and it seems they have :beer:

    Lots of banks will charge you for getting foreign currency from your debit card. Check your T&Cs to see if you will be charged. Halifax (Visa Debit) does not charge, but I believe most of the others do.

    You obviously didn't look at this section then;

    Pay the right way. All credit & some debit cards charge fees when you buy foreign cash, see full list & how to avoid.

    It lists those that charge and those that do not, I suspect it may be slightly out of date tho'.

    From that page:

    Visa Debit cards. If you have one of the following debit cards, you'll be charged a 2%-ish fee. The banks that charge issue 'Visa Debit' (previously Delta) cards, though that doesn’t mean every Visa Debit card charges.
  • Nope you're spot on, i hadnt seen that link.

    Seems i just dropped lucky (I'm a first direct or nationwide chap myself!) and have never received any 'stealth' charges.

    Seeing the list of those who do charge it should be expected given most of them are a shower of !!!! anyway! :-)

    I am also a HSBC/ Nationwide customer, my worry is that when HSBC change my Maestro Card to a Visa Card, apart from losing my £250 Cheque Guarantee facility, I may also get stung for this currency charge.

    I know that I can use my Nationwide Card, but that isn't always convenient for me.

    Of course for small amounts of currency I just use my NW Card at an overseas ATM, best deal of all.:T
  • Cant promise the rules dont change once Maestro is phased out, but I didnt get charged by FD for my currency purchase about 6 weeks ago and I've had a Visa Debit with them since January this year..

    High 5 to First Direct! lol
