Visa Debit Full Authorisation or Normal ?

I am a bit confused with all the talk of a 'Full Authorisation' Visa Debit, or a 'Normal Visa Debit', and ones which always require authorisation and others that have a Visa Debit card number but are the same as Electron !.

I have a LTSB Visa Debit which is also a Cashpoint card and a Cheque Guarantee Card so which one do I have ?, will my card always have to be authorised or can it be used in places that do not require authorisation (although I admit I can't think of any !).

Thanks.

If you have a cheque guarantee then it will be normal debit card which will work in 'offline terminals'. The difference being that electron (or full auth cards) will seek authorisation and if it cannot be given will have to decline the sale. Therefore stopping you from going overdrawn. A normal card would usually work, especially on tesco pay at pumps etc which electron & all auth cards will not.

A cheque guarantee card is the best card you can get and will always be a full card...... 3-in-1 (cheque card, debit card, cash card)

Offline terminals include; on board a train and/or plane using the handheld devices; at tesco pay @ pump petrol stations; some motorway service stations.

I would swear you have that in cut and paste somewhere, just for these questions.

I have a LTSB 2-in-1 card (no chq guarantee), however my card worked fine at Tesco Pay-at-Pump yesterday? (and always has done)

Having cheque guarantee means that it's a full Visa debit card.

However, the converse is not true, if you don't have the cheque guarantee it could be either full-auth or normal. If it works fine at Tesco's pay-at-pump, then it's a normal one.

Agreed - sorry I never mentioned the 'in between' card (2in-1) but as you say, it can be either/or and you'll know when you try it lol :D

I tried my LTSB 2-in-1 debit card today at Tesco's Pay@Pump petrol terminal ... I was pretty sure I'd used it before (and posted it somewhere on here lol), but tried again today. It takes the card, and says I can fill up to the value of £99.

Card starts 4921 8165 xxxxx xxxx.

I know cards that start 4462 are the 3-in-1 cards, so how is a Full auth 2-in-1 card differentiated from an offline 2-in-1?

I assume my Visa Debit card is Offline card?

If you have a 2-in-1 Visa Debit card, there is no way to tell (as far as I am aware) whether you have an online or offline card - the bank would make you aware. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the type of account you hold with the bank is a good indicator which type of debit card you have. Basic bank accounts tend to have online cards (as those accounts are not meant to go overdrawn), and full current accounts will come with an offline card (due to the ability to have an overdraft).

A 2-in-1 Visa Electron is always online, and was traditionally how you would differentiate between Visa's online and offline debit cards. However recently banks have begun issuing online Visa Debit cards (I'm not sure why). Perhaps someone could shed some light? At a guess I would have said the greater acceptance of Visa Debit in the U.K. and more importantly internationally? Not sure really.

It is an offline card, I have exactly the same with my Lloyds TSB Silver AVA.

You might find the below Wikipedia article useful, it identifies the first four digits of your PAN as a LTSB Visa Debit:-

    List of Bank Identification Numbers

Edit: Electron's are online, I initially referred to them as offline by mistake, thanks simax.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

I think you may have your online and offline mixed up :rotfl:

Hopefully, by the time 2011 comes around the technology will be up to authorising every transaction. I would personally prefer it, in case I miscounted to avoid bank charges. I can see the point about being embarrassed and so I would want to be able to use my card on board a train if I could not buy the ticket before hand without worry. I dont fancy being arrested by the Transport Police for fare dodging.
