Visa Debit Full Authorisation or Normal ?

  • The interesting thing is, on a train, it says on the menu for the restraunt car that they accepts Visa.
There is no mention about on line and off line cards.

So say, if someone had a meal, then presents their card to pay the bill (not knowing the differance between the two types of card) I wonder what would happen, particularly if the card is declined and the person has no other means to pay.

After all it is not the card holders 'fault' if the menu says they accept visa, just that their particular card doesn't work.

In this day and age there is little excuse for every transaction not being authorised at point of sale. Any where without a hardwire link to the merchant must be able to get mobile broadband to connect for authorisation. Or access to a telephone.

Other day PC Worlds computers were down when I was trying to pay for something by card (ironic I know). Out came the old carbon copy embossing machine thingy. But they still telephoned for authorisation and it still came off my available balance right away

The trouble with this change is (as a previous poster pointed out) the fact that the cards no longer have anything obvious to tell you who will accept and who won't.
Under the old system of solo/electron for the online cards you would instantly be able to check with a merchant if they accept that type of card.

It muddies the whole issue, most of us on here will understand the difference and can probably work out where an online card would be refused. But alot of average bods won't have a clue. Plus even if you ask in the shop etc how many staff members will have any idea what you are talking about "yes sir we do take visa" then at the end the card is rejected.

Effectively relagates the card to a cashcard as it will be easier to draw the cash out first as you know that will be accepted.

    Talk about confusing the system.

I think you may have your online and offline mixed up :rotfl:

Oops, thanks for that. Although I was only mistake with referring to the Electron as offline. You do get online Visa Debit cards.

    Cheers anyways.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.

I would imagine it is certainly possible yes, but not cost effective.

Hi, I have an LTSB Visa Debit Card - card number starts with 4921. Anyway to find out if this card is offline or eletron?

It's not a CG - According to LTSB - They do not issue CG anymore.

Visa is a brand, not a card type.

Why should there be? Its the customers fault if they order and cannot pay not the trains - at the end of the day a retailer can refuse to accept any method of payment they see fit at any time so could demand cash or card... its not for you to say!

If you'd already eaten and run a tab, they would ask for I.D like a driving licence and then send the bill to your home address - same as boarding without a ticket and funds to pay.

Point is you know what card you have so you're responsible for establishing the type of card it is.

See above - answered it there.

Actually it is. It definitely isn't the train companies fault

I have 3 x 4921 LTSB Debit Cards like yours - as they were all issued within the last four days, I haven't yet tested them but I have never had anything but offline cards from LTSB since 1985, so would be extremely surprised if these were not normal Visa Debit Cards.

Ali, basically the onus is on you - the user - to establish the card type and * you're clearly told when you get the card and/or PIN - and to establish the stores that will accept the card, its simple - if you have a Full Auth card then you must not try and use it at obvious places that are not online like a plane (at 30,000ft) or say a train (on the portable handheld device)......

I think yet again it boils down to trial and error and common sense. If it didn't work somewhere i'd use another card that did. If I didn;t have another card i'd pay cash. But thats just me - I carry enough to cover these eventualities and I use trains daily to communte (but I do have Bank Cards so they will always authorise)....

    * If not you ring the bank and ask them!

They replace like for like and would not downgrade the card unecessarily..... so in your case, they will perform the same function but simply without CGC element :D
