Hi
Not sure if this has already been answered as there are lots of posts for this thread?
Checking on the 'Say No' website there is an alternate number provided for a 0845 number. The alternate number begins 01.
I am currently on the BT free evening and weekend plan.
When I check on the BT website, calls during the day to 0845 numbers cost 2.042 and 01 numbers cost 8.41 pence per minute.
So unless I have missed something here, it seems I am better off sticking to the 0845 number.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks
G
The way in which packages are priced today — and this applies to the market in general and not just BT — is that the standard incidental price of a "normal" call (geographic/03) is zero. This is because only a few non-inclusive calls need be made to reach and pass the break-even point of moving onto a package which includes calls at the time one makes them.
This is due to the combined effect of the high per minute charges, which are therefore penalty charges, and the cost of inclusive plans.
So you are correct in that the penalty charge for geographic/03 calls is greater than the 0845 charge with BT. This is down to regulation on it which keeps the price of 0845 calls down.
Chargeable (i.e. non-inclusive) calls attract a Call Set-up fee of 13.87 pence with BT.
When geographic calls are billed, their duration are rounded up to the next whole minute. So the penalty charge of 8.41 pence per minute also applies for any part-minute.
The duration of calls to 0845 numbers are rounded up to the next whole second rather than the next whole minute.0 -

Because of the way BT are regulated this is an anomaly and you are correct, (don't forget the 14p connection fee), however of you use one of the following you will only pay a 5p connection fee and 0ppm for 01/02/03 numbers no matter how long the call duration.

Thanks for the information.
Please clarify, as well as the 01 call costing more per minute I will also be charged a conection fee (13.87p) as well. Or do I get charged the fee for both 0845 and 01 calls?
Cheers

Hi

Is there any catch with these sites?
Will I start being plagued with unsolicited calls?
Thanks

Sorry about this!
On the 18185 website, isn't their Rate Chart saying that a 0845 call during the day costs 3p a minute?
Thanks

Yes it does, 0845 numbers are revenue sharing numbers and as such cannot be 0ppm, BT charge during the day 2ppm, (if not on their anytime package when it will be inclusive), but have a 14p connection charge as against 18185 having a 5p connection charge, only BT charge less than anyone else because of the way they are regulated and cannot charge more than the cost of the call on 0845.
Your original post said,"Checking on the 'Say No' website there is an alternate number provided for a 0845 number. Got it!
Thanks for all the input.
Very informative.
