.....Gross as it sounds though, after one frantic session of being unable to get hold of it enough to take it out, I went for a number 2 and that helped push it down too, to get hold of it.

The trick for getting it out is to bear down like you're going to the loo, then pinch the cup (not the stem) with your finger and thumb and squeeze it to break the suction.

Tugging on the stem is like pulling on a toilet plunger, it creates suction. I cut mine off because it got in the way and wasn't particularly usefull.

I'm too scared to try one

Can anyone convince me otherwise?? I detest tampons and towels so this sounds like a real alternative.

What scares you about trying one?
Or is it just a fear of the unknown?

A fear of the unknown I think is what is stopping me, that and I don't know of anyone personally who has used one that I can ask an opinion of, IYSWIM

I may have a look at the offer that was posted on here and see if I can get the courage up to try :)

Ah I see. I had a friend who used one, so she was raving on about it (and bought ones for her sisters for xmas) so I had someone to ask about it which was handy.

I must admit I found it a bit odd to start with, but I then I did wonder why I thought it was any different really froom tampons that I'd been using. Major concerns were:
    1) inserting
    2) removing
    3) leaking.

Once I got a handle on the folding technique for insertion it was fine; had to realise as others have mentioned, you don't just try to pull it out, you have to break the suction (I did wonder if it was possible to pull yourself inside out if you didn't break the suction - but I've not experimented with that yet....) and I've not had a leaking problem.

I must admit though that I have to be in the right mood to use it though. Haven't worked that one out for myself yet though.

I explained the Mooncup to a 68 yr old friend of mine the other day. She was baffled .... I had to explain it in real detail :D

She was telling me how she used to have to use washable pads and hated them with a passion. I was telling her how the washable ones were really popular now. It's hard to explain it all to someone who saw disposable sanitary protection as a real advance.

By the end of [strike]my lecture [/strike] our conversation she thought Mooncups were a really good invention ...... still, she was very pleased that it was all behind her :D

    The mind boggles!
I must admit I'm curious as to how the older generation view the move back to reusuable protection. But I suppose we have these advances in materials which mean that it's easier to deal with it all. No belts and the like, we've got poppers on the pads!

Yes, the belts were mentioned! I don't think it helped when they HAD to use them right from the first day of their periods, also they had to wash them by hand. The lady I was talking to said that she was only 11 yrs old and that she felt very conspicuous..... she could barely walk with the big lump of fabric between her legs and that if her Father asked her to pass the salt at dinner, she couldn't bear to do so as the pads and the whole thing was so uncomfortable.

The thought of a small, fleecy pad are much more appealing to her though she said that she hated the feeling of 'it coming out' .... which I suppose is why many women use tampons/mooncups.

This is my second month using the mooncup and I have to say it's actually less messy than tampons and towels, and (sorry if anyone is squeamish) because the blood doesn't come into contact with the air, it doesn't smell as well. Sometimes when I'm using a towel, I feel like everyone knows I'm having my period! Also the silicone is very smooth and you don't get the friction you sometimes get with tampons.

I'm sorry if this is too much info, but I hope it helps! It's worth a try, if you hate tampons and towels to begin with. I know I hesitated for about a year and when I finally got the mooncup, I kicked myself for not starting earlier! I'm told the help service from the mooncup company is very helpful, though I've not had a need to use them.
