Agreed - my daughter uses HSBC - she just told me she does not get charged these fees.
RBS/NatWest are the problem here. Unfortunately they are so big they can get away with really poor customer service.

Here is Martins article, the relevant section is below.

Beware when paying on credit OR debit cards!

Sadly, buying currency from a bureau de change in the UK on a credit or debit card isn’t always treated as a UK transaction. All credit cards and some debit cards charge an additional fee on top of what you pay the bureau de change.

    All Credit Cards.

    All credit cards charge a fee of around 2.5% (minimum £3) when you buy foreign currency;

    Visa Debit cards.

If you have one of the following debit cards, you'll be charged a 2%-ish fee. The banks that charge issue 'Visa Debit' (previously Delta) cards, though that doesn’t mean every Visa Debit card charges.

Debit cards that DO charge a fee :
    Abbey
    A&L
    Barclays
    Cahoot
    Co-Op
    Lloyds
    Smile
    Natwest / RBS

Debit cards that DON'T charge a fee
    Coventry BS
    First Direct
    Halifax
    HSBC
    IF
    Nationwide

The easiest solution is to close your account then this can be done in branch or by putting it in writing.

That is completely untrue. My Visa Debit card (Coventry) doesn't charge this fee, neither does HSBC as far as I know.

VISA CHARGE XX on the Co-Op statement means a charge FOR using you Visa not a charge BY Visa Europe.

If you look at Martins article on "Cards from Hell" you will see its a charge that the banks make on buying foreign currency.

I was always under the impression this was a charge instigated visa.

Bare in mind i dont hold a visa card with every bank.

However every visa card i do hold does attract such a fee.

My Ulsterbank card charges, but they are owned by Robbing Ba&#@rdS .

Every other visa (debit) card i hold does not charge a fee.:)
