We watched Chariots of Fire at school. Oh, and we also saw Footloose, but had to do a sponsored dance beforehand (even then, there was no such thing as a free lunch!).

There are so many good films to choose from, it's going to be a hard choice for you.....What about Titanic? Do you have to tie it in with a subject the kids are studying?

Good God...have you actually WATCHED it?!!

One of my favourite films of all time (and I showed it to my son when he was about 7), but it's packed with swearing and general filth, full frontal nudity, and in particular has those pretty explicit oral sex scenes....

    It's a Certificate 15 - I've just checked the box !!
Interestingly, the bits I remember are Pontius Pilate with the speech impediment, the pseudo union meeting - where they are arguing over the wording of their groups title !!, and the prisoner who calls everyone else lucky 84&$t@rd$

When we go to the pet shop to buy supplies we try to work out which one of the fluffy creatures could be a "Wild" rabbit like the one from the Holy Grail who ripped out throats and tore off limbs...... :rotfl:

Re the swearing and general filth, I think on current form, a film with the same type of swearing and general filth probably wouldn't even warrant a 12 certificate these days.

Maybe you could pick them appropriate to the time of year

Which was my point exactly with my suggestion for the first one (presuming it's imminent) given what's just happened this week ... 70th anniversary

    HALOWEEN - 1978 >>> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077651/
Ratings around the world vary significantly from 12 (France) 13 (Argentina, Canada) 14 (Italy, Chile) 15 (Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden)

BUT as was pointed out only a few days ago in some film discussion I was listening to, 99% of what you think happens is all implied and is in the mind of the viewer NOT actually on screen - eg you see a girl, you see a knife in a hand, back to the girl now with a bloodstain and then the knife also with blood

If you think this is TOO EXTREME ...

Check out the PARENTS GUIDE for it >>> http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0077651/parentalguide

    Quote at the bottom ...

Many frightening/intense scenes - Nothing a 13 year old couldnt handle

No, the only link to education is to offer a club that's open toa ll regardless of ability (academic or otherwise) and to discuss the themes within the film...be it a deep and meaningful discussion or light hearted about how long it took to film Wallace and Grommit (1 minute = 3 seconds for anyone who's interested!)
Valuable life advice: never play chicken with a lion...the lion will ALWAYS win!

Trust me...we are trying to get some films recertified given the ridiculousness of some older certificates - Gremlins for instance still carries a 15 certificate...my fifteen year old found it amusing rather than scary or 'rude' My problem is it only takes ONE complaint from a parent and no more filmclub :(

How about something lighthearted then - maybe Grease.? Or anything with Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey in - kids love 'em (can't stand them personally!)

The hard thing will be choosing a film that appeals to both boys and girls. I was thinking maybe Star Wars, but remember going to the cinema with my grandad as a kid to watch this, and spending most of the time in the toilet! I used to love musicals as child - everything was so magical then, and the colours were really bright in those films, dont you think?

  • Just got back from Avatar...wow...amazing graphics - gives a whole new meaning to CGI. Was a little let down with the Pocahontas storyline but the effects were amazing!

    I'm thinking Inception this weekend!;)
