good grief - stick to the topic - the OP cannot afford the overpriced school uniform at the one shop selling it!!
is that so difficult to take on board?
i have been in his situation with three kids in same school and at the prices he has mentioned it cost a small fortune to kit kids out for school - also he didnt get letter about school uniforms! cant the school cut him a bit of slack? it could have been the kids were off ill or on one of school trips day letter sent out. if other parents concerned then its a matter for school governers. the issue should be on hold until its resolved. its a bit much to get letter second day into term! i do not understand why some posters are putting so much vitriol into this. he has legitimate concerns - so get off his back!

it is not a case of a difference of opinion - this situation is wrong. I strongly suggest you read this.

Even the Schools Minister says Schools should be taken to court for forcing parents to pay high prices for uniforms supplied by exclusive outfitters

Just because a minister says something could happen doesn't mean it will!

There are a lot of if buts and maybe's in that article.
  • Slightly random but I have a very tall and slim young 4 yr old lad and being tied to only being able to purchase one style from one shop etc for uniform means he has to have very baggy in the body tops to get the sleeve length !! Hey - ho!!!
  • Here is the government's guidance (i.e not law) to schools on uniform:

Surprisingly enough, the OFT appears not to have any specific powers under the Competition Act in respect of school uniform cartels (according to their website)

I had that prolem with my son and it continued right through to sixth form. Another boy in his class was a bit chubby and his sleeves were always far too long. You can't win can you :rotfl:

This isn't correct. My daughter was bullied at primary school, she frequently had coats, pe kit etc taken from cloakroom and trashed. This was not her fault, one teacher blamed my daughter and refused to deal with the problem. After months of problems she was forced to apologise to my daughter. Perhaps you should consider how a bullied child feels when they are then blamed for the prolem by adults.

Obviosly it's unfortunate if this happens but I don't think that it's the main point that was being made.

Yes, I've been following this one too :D

Managed to get al the uniform bought through saving, and excellent charity shop finds.

All the kids are now prepped and ready, I still don't agree on the cost, Where we live there is no finacial help for uniforms, and no school bursar ( sp? )

But hey, its all done and dusted... till next year.

If the school does insist on your kids wearing the uniforms with the badges, perhaps you could try to obtain the uniform from the manufacturer / company who sews the logo's. There was a school clothing shop down here, that went bankrupt in the last few weeks. They had a monopoly, but since the bankruptcy anouncement, the uniform sewing company has announced that you can buy the uniform direct from them. I don't have any kids, so this is just what i heard on the radio. Not sure if you have a similar company near you, but it may be worth a go as should save you money as it will cut out the middle man. Hope that helps.

I went to a secondary school that had the same policy, we were not well off when i was at school so my mum had to struggle for everythin, and being told by the school that we weren't following guidelines by not wearing the correct uniform was upsetting for my mum. Luckilly there was a few advertised cheaply in the local classified ad paper. My school by the way was very strict on the uniform policy had a blazer - which must have the school logo badge sewn on, had to have a tie in the teams you were in's colour, also had to have a sports vest and rugby top also in teams colour. Because the colours weren't standard could not buy them from supermarket's / sports shops had to get them from the school uniform shop at great expense. Because this was the best of the schools in the town my mum insisted i go to this school, even though she had to struggle as the other schools were bad.

Blimey...that is overpriced. My son's jumper and polo tops are logo'd and the polos are £5 and the jumpers are £8. Still quite a bit, but more manageable.
