School Uniform !

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong area, but I didnt know where to put it, and seeing as I am claiming JSA and thats part of the reason for this minor rant, I thought I'd stick it here.

To the point.

My child starts secondry school this Sept. and OMG how much does the uniform cost ?

Just on the school logo'd stuff its costing me 96.45  ( thats 2 blazers,1 polo shirt,1 rugby shirt,1 trackie bottoms and a tie )
I have no idea how I'm meant to pay for all this, and this price hasnt taken into account of all the other stuff she will need.

The school in question has 100% monopoly on the school uniform, its not available to purchase anywhere else, and I have contacted them to see if they do any schemes/second hand clothes days, of which they do neither.

I've called the local council, they also have no finacial help available.

I've tried freecycle/local papers/ebay, no luck.

I really don't know what to do, I've been saving up my silvers, I'm not in the position to get any credit cards/loans, as I wouldnt be able to afford to pay them back plus interest.

Do you guys have any other idea's please ?

Thanks in advance.

All my friends only bought one blazer, it wont get that dirty so cant see the need for two - hopefully that will be a big chunk off the total. The rest you can perhaps get weekly with CB/CTC until the beginning of September.

Does the uniform HAVE to have the logo on?

My son's school uniform is expensive too but it's not necessary to buy the logo'd stuff so most people buy plain from Asda, Tesco, M&S etc.

Daisy - There is a need for two, my daughters quite large in the bust, and I need one for now, and a larger one for well later, I suppose I could just order the smaller one,and when she does grow, get a bigger one, selling the smaller one on ebay or summat.

RobPw - I have a fantastic local charity shop, who have already promised to keep anything for the certain school by for me.

Beenie - Yes it does have to have the logo on, its written everywhere on there entrance forms, and failure to comply will mean your child being sent home until proper uniform is supplied, its a 'troubled' school trying to get a better rep, so is being very strict on uniform.

Thankyou so far for your replies

Can you not just get a bigger blazer to last a few years? Most of my friends at secondary school had a blazer that lasted at least 3 years.

Can you not ask the CAB if there are any grants that are not mentioned any where? Failing that, can you get a budgeting loan from the social fund to help with the costs?

My son's school just had to have the badge. Bought his blazer in Asda for £13. Also bought their shirts, £4 for two. Tip: Buy short sleeved ones, then the cuffs don't get dirty with paint, ink etc. If they've got a blazer on it makes no difference. Only buy wha you must from the school shop.

Child denied education for not wearing school logo, at £96 a term!

Yes, I can see that as a headline in the Daily Mail right now...

Personally I'd buy the bits from Asda, and if she's sent home, then I'd deal with it then. It's wrong to be held over a barrel because you can't afford it. School's like this live in cuckoo land.

I simply wouldn't buy it! If she get's sent home, then stand your ground. They're being unreasonable. People will support you.

My child's primary school charge for school uniform. It HAS to have the name of the school with their logo on, and the children are all expected to have either a jumper, cardigan or hoodie (yes they do sell hoodie's lol) from the school. They are red in colour.

I bought DD red cardi's off ebay, far cheaper. Her pinnafores and trousers came from Tesco. They are exactly the same as the school's, without the logo or school name. Fourth week into school, and unusually I am collecting my child (childminder normally collects as I am still at work usually), I get met by the receptionist who tells me I have to purchase a uniform complete with the school logo, for my daughter. I tell her I have no intention of parting with money to pay a ridiculous price for a few logo'd jumpers that she will outgrow in a term or so, and point out that the cardi's she has are exactly the same and would only be noticed as different if you were looking for the logo which is quite small. The head teacher then spoke to me, and insisted that DD absolutely HAD to be in logo'd school uniform. Again, I refused, stating that if school is going to dictate what my children wear, and set it at a ridiculously high price then they can damned well pay for it. I'm all for school uniform and being smart. I'm not all for the prices they set.

For me it wasn't even about affording it. I'm as capable as every other person of saving a little aside each week, knowing full well a year before my DD was due to begin school that she was expected to wear logos. My principle of point was that the prices were ridiculous and why should a parent have to put aside the money to save up when they can purchase perfectly good and perfectly smart school uniform elsewhere that are exactly the same with the exception of the logos. I'm not paying near £100 each term for a picture, and that's all there was to it. Well, it wasn't all there was to it, there was also the "your child is not allowed juice in her water bottle, we only allow water or milk - school policy" and being contacted by these childsmile people (who come to school to flouriode all the children's teeth) by phone to ask why I had ticked the box on the form which says I don't want details of my children stored or shared. I just feel it's another dictatorship and big brother.

In the end I told the head that if my daughter was sent home from school that it would be considered a denial of her right to an education, and that if she was denied her education over the sake of me refusing to fork out £100 for a picture, I'd take it to the education board, and reminded her that her role is educating my child in reading, writing and arithmatic. My role is to parent. I don't tell her how to teach so I don't expect her to tell me what I can or cannot give my child to drink, frown on me for refusing the sharing of my child's data, and dictate how much money I SHOULD spend on a uniform. I've heard no more about it since our little, erm "discussion"

OP my son is starting senior school this year and I also have to buy a blazer (which we get made to measure) at about 50 quid and at that price I'm definately not getting more than one so this one WILL last the year come what may - are you sure you couldn't buy big and make it last ?
