Ask your LL to supply a tempory oven ie a 2 ring belling oven or to get you a slow cooker / george foreman grill etc. there really is no reason for a 3 week delay so many places delv and connect electrical stuff these days.

cous cous is easy to make, measure out required amount into a measuring jug or bowl, add required amount of boiling water and cover with a tea towel for about 5 mins, fluff with a fork and serve. Noodles can also be done this way.
  • LL lives in Spain so can't come round to look at it, and said he wants to see it before he pays anyone else. So glad we're moving...

Anyway, cous cous is a good idea. Any way of doing pasta in the microwave?? Will be eating lots of salads for the next 3 weeks I think!

How about a BBQ in the garden? Sorry I am rubbish with microwaves. I just have a 2 ring belling oven which is rubbish for baking cakes but fine for everything else, well apart from cooking for lots of people.

Ok so i had a really biazzer day friday. hopefully i won't waffle too much, lol

We have an annual gas check of our boiler and gas cooker carbon monoside alarm thingy .and friday British gas turned up as planned. all was going fantastic. Everything passed and he got down to the cooker.

Midwife turned up ( i'm having a few probs with pregnancy) turns out i'm suffering almost 24/7 with braxton hicks and hardly able to walk with some of them. oh the joys.

Anyway as i'm dealing with this, the gas man then tell's me . my cooker has been condemmed there and then. and has to be disconnected as it is of immediate danger to life.

um ok, totally took back by that. he discconected it, and not just discoonected it, even took the baynoet fitting fromt he wall and capped it completly off.

All becuase when the lid is down on the cooker one of the knobs safety catch has gone and you can turn the knob while lid is down and if the gas was alite and the lid fell down it wouldn't disconnect the gas. Was told coulndn't get the part and therefore too dangerous. :rotfl::eek: What i was thinking!!!

Having my mind half on midwife, half on son on potty , half on the craziness of gas man. i didn't think to ask any sensible questions.

So i now have no cooker. no one has been bought but not coming till tuesday. We've had meals out the last 2 days which is fine. but i'm missing cooking.

But what can i cook ?

i have a slowcooker, but usually if i cook a sausage casserole or chilli etc, i brown the meat first . if i make a curry , how do i cook the rice ? how can i cook pasta if i make a bologanaise sauce? if i make a stew how do i cook the potatos ?

i have a microwave but i only use it for heating up milk. i don't know how to actually cook with it.

i am really baffled. it has compeltly thrown me not having a cooker. and i didn't reaslise how much i love cooking and baking.

I've done potatoes in the slow cooker, you don't have to brown the meat it's entirely up to yourself. I would stick the stewing steak, veggies and sliced potatoes in the slow cooker and just have it as a one pot meal.

For cooking in the microwave, 6-8oz cover with a cup of water and stick in the micro for 9 minutes uncovered. You have to stir it once during this time and you might have to add a little water if it's getting too dry. Depending on the watt of micro you might have to alter the cooking time.

Not sure about rice but if you google I'm sure there will be a way to cook it in the slow cooker/microwave.

Could you just have the curry with toast/nan/prawn crackers instead of rice? If it's only until Tuesday it's only a couple of days meals you have to think about, do you have any freezer meals you could defrost and reheat in the microwave to make life easier until the new cooker comes through?

Veggies can be done in the microwave easily and quickly. Chop them up in a bowl, splash of water and cover with a plastic lid/clingfilm/dish, cook for 3-4 minutes and it'll be nicely steamed.

Have you got a bbq or something similar and you can do some grills and have them with bread?

pasta and rice can be done in micro. Actually easier to cook in micro - havent done it for a while though - so you would have to google how long for. One of these George Foreman (or lookalikes) grills are great for cooking meat. I have cooked chicken, steaks etc., on it. I had one that had interchangeable plates - flat plate was great for bacon and eggs etc., you might just be able to get them with a flat plate. Just seen you have ordered a new cooker so you might not ewant to rush out and buying one of these - but you might already have one. Another easy one is couscous - you just put it in a bowl and pour boiling water over.

Do you have a steamer? You can do rice, veg, fish and chicken in these.

When I didn't have a cooker or microwave one of my most adventurous meals was frozen peas (cooked in the kettle), waffles (cooked in the toaster) and a bought pie covered in gravy (from water in kettle).
