My cooker has broken down, the engineer who usually services it went on hols yesterday for 3 weeks. I have rung several other engineers yesterday but no one has phoned back.
It is an oil fuelled Alpha. It is working for hot water and heating but the ovens and hot plate are not starting.
I have a small microwave and a camping stove.
I will have to buy something, this weekend , to cook hot food in. Suggestions please.0 -
Do you have a slow cooker? If not GET ONE ...lol! They are the best thing since (home made) sliced bread and you can use them for so many things from cooking a whole chicken to making a rice pudding. I wouldnt be without one as my oven is cream crackered so I only have a reliable hob. Also an electric steamer would be a good idea for cooking rice, veg , fish etc etc. Neither are hugely expensive and very easy to use. Most supermarkets do a value steamer for around £10 and slow cookers can range from £10 upwards.JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200
FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

Slow cooker is a very good idea. If it's only for a few weeks I wouldn't bother buying anything else. You can cook most things in a microwave - rice, pasta, potatoes, veg. With both a slow cooker and a microwave you should be fine0

George Foreman Grill? Do you have a barbecue/outdoor grill? Breville Pie Magic? Toastie maker? Microwave? - beg, borrow, scrounge from friends/relatives for a couple of weeks.
Do you know anybody who you could perhaps borrow one of those mini ovens from?0 -
Another vote for a slow cooker.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

DD has just got back from shopping in the village. She managed to buy, from one of the hardware stores, a morphy richards slow cooker - £37.99.
I am not really a gadget person so this is a whole new adventure.
So I will boldly go to the slow cooker thread.
Thank you.0 -
Instead of committing hard-earned cash to temporary measures I'd have a look on your local Freecycle first. People give away the most extraordinarily useful things. Next, I'd canvas neighbours, friends and family for a loan of a few handy items. The one thing I would buy if I couldn't get one on Freecycle is a slow-cooker: I reckon once you've got accustomed to using one you'll never look back and wonder how you managed without one.0

slow cooker also gets my vote , couldn't live without mine now, I hardly ever use my oven for cooking stews curries joints of meat and i always look or get one of the children to look on here first for a recipe for slow cooker man i love this sitePaul Walker , in my dreams;)0

I had this problem a few months ago when our new kitchen was being fitted. People suggested a slow cooker but I looked at the slow cooker recipes and most stated that you had to brown the meat first, which was no use to me with no hob.
Instead I bought a two ring electric hob from Argos for only £12.50 which plugs into a normal plug socket, you can use it for cooking anything that you would on a normal hob.
Used the microwave for baked potatoes etc.
We had a lot of pasta and stir fries things for a few weeks but noone died0
