Meals with no oven or hob!

You can get mini ovens from the likes of Aldi/Lidl for about £20. These are a small fan-assisted oven and grill, so handy afterwards too for heating up just one baked potato or one pie or one portion of food etc. They're small, but big enough to cook large pies etc.
Then you can get a separate 2-plate electric hob as suggested above.
I'd not get a combined unit ... somehow I don't fancy trying to cook/balance boiling spuds on top of an oven.0 -
My cooker has broken down, the engineer who usually services it went on hols yesterday for 3 weeks. I have rung several other engineers yesterday but no one has phoned back.
It is an oil fuelled Alpha. It is working for hot water and heating but the ovens and hot plate are not starting.
I have a small microwave and a camping stove.
I will have to buy something, this weekend , to cook hot food in. Suggestions please.
Hope you get it back soon
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread to give you more ideas

Instant mash has got significantly better over the years; rice and couscous both cook fine in the microwave. You can also find frozen mashed potatoes.
Fish can be microwaved, but it is easier said than done: they have very short cooking times and don't tolerate even slight overcooking.
You can also buy fancy soups. These microwave fine, though they are not always very cheap.0 -
Hi All
My new boyfriend is coming over this weekend. I would really like to cook something special for him, but I have a problem. I am renovating a property and don't have a cooker!
The tools I have to get by (and I have done for 6 months now) are:
Slow cooker
Grilling machine
Microwave
What would you cook to make a really good impression/show off?
Also, what would you do for breakfast? cereal or porridge won't really do!
Any suggestions gatefully received!0 -
I take it you have a fridge?? Breakfast could be smoked salmon served with scrambled eggs that have been done in the microwave, posh toasted bread done on the grilling machine? Or the scrambled eggs with big mushrooms, bacon etc done on the grilling machine. For dinner, a nice stew done in the slow cooker with french stick? or you can steam veggies in the microwave, or microwave cubed root veg to make a mash to go with something, maybe a steak done on the grilling machine?.. i'm sure whatever you do you can pep up a bit with posh breads and cold stuffs. Good luck!0

I think I'd buy some lamb and mediterranean veg (aubergines, courgettes, red onion, peppers etc etc) and a few spices and do a stew in the slow cooker, and serve it with the nicest crusty bread you can find.
You could also do gazpacho which doesn't require any cooking at all
If you wanted a pudding, you could do a sponge pudding in the microwave although I suppose it's not really steamed pudding weather is it?!
For breakfast I think the scrambled egg idea is a winner, or you could toast some bagels in the grilling machine and fill them with smoked salmon and cream cheese and a sprinkling of chives.0 -

Try this older thread on cooking without an oven or hobI'll merge this later to keep ideas together.
I'd agree with smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast.:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
I loooove posh scrambled eggs as well, but if you don't, how about using the grilling machine to make breakfast panini - cook your bacon/mushrooms/tomatoes or whatever you like, then put in the ciabatta or whatever bread you have with cheese if you like, put in the grilling machine. That should give him enough energy to help with the renovations!! Good luck.0

So, just as I try to cut back on my groceries spends, our oven breaks. Our LL has said that he won't be able to fix it before we move out (~3weeks time).

How can your landlord not fix it?? I think he is trying to pull a fast one and then keep your deposit or something like that
You can make a roast in the micro - I have done it before, but you need a corningware type dish with lid. Put in chicken and veg into one dish and micro on med/med low. It wont brown though, that is the only thing.
I use my micro to make lots - scrambled egg, cheese sauce, all veg etc. If you have one of those micro steamers you could do a whole meal in one shot.
