could it be that your FIL was the one who used to pay for days and meals out ,and she has just got stuck in a rut of thinking that the man should pay for things like that .
she may think that you would be offended if she paid .

My wife thinks thats part of it. She never even used to have any money of her own. FIL kept it all and paid for things.

whether or not it's 'binge' drinking, 25 bottles regularly at a weekend (not including week nights) is a lot. maybe it's average for a 19 year old student, but for a grandmother it seems like a lot!

Whilst I agree with the fact that 25 bottle of beer over a weekend is alot, I disagree that 4 in one evening is even close to binge drinking, whatever the current guidelines apparently are.

Your MIL has quite a few problems is appears. Firstly, she is probably lonely after the death of her OH. Secondly, her drinking - is she perhaps bored when she is babysitting at your house?

Your wife will have to talk to her about finances, but she may not see your pint. You may want to spend your money is ways which she and her OH could never aspire to, so she may see your spending as extravagant. At the same time being blind to that fact that she benefits from the meals out. Stopping these should help make the point.

  • Hi all

have been reading through this with interest. I would definitely find another babysitter, I would be really worried about leaving a child with someone who is drinking whilst babysitting. If anything happened you would feel awful.

Like many other posters suggested, I would cut back on spending by making a meal at home (maybe going out just once) and buying a lot less beer!!
