Vet open on bank holiday?

  • Hi Zippy,
Agree with Jenny, we're al thinking about you and Maggie and wishing you well.

Your vet sounds great, follow her advice and I'm sure Maggie will perk up again. Dry food with maybe a little bit of chicken on top to tempt her should sort her system out with the antibiotics.

Just one thought though, in one of the photos did I see Maggie drinking some milk (I may be hallucinating of course)? If you're giving her milk, you probably need to stop, milk isn't good for cats and especially not elderly cats, it upsets their stomachs.

Like Jenny says, a lot of elderly cats have liver problems (mine did). With lots of TLC and vet care they can carry on with a good quality of life for some time (mine also did that!).

I do know exactly how you're feeling, I went through a year of this with my elderly cat, he'd be fine for ages and then totally down the next day and need to be rushed to the vet for more treatment. It's very difficult to live with and I really do sympathise with what you're going through.

As Jenny says, as long as Maggie is a happy cat and coming for cuddles I wouldn't worry too much, but I do know that's easier said than done.

If you need support, you know where we are.

Take care and hugs to Maggie x

    Hi TRH & Jenny
Ok, so went to the vets at lunch and spoke to Tom. He said this course of tabs may sort her out , or may not. She may need anti bis for ever - she may just be old and shutting down, she may be fine. Of course im paraphrasing but you know what I mean. Really I have to keep a close eye on her still

Thnks for the advice - I really do appeciate it. Yes she is drinking milk in one of the pics - but that's quite an old pic. It's just one of my faves as it has her with her tongue out (they look so funny). Don't worry I am not giving her milk in this recent situation! I do appreciate the comment though - don't be scared to pull me up on these things!:rotfl:

The wet food - i feel bad enough giving her that, as it's changing her palate and making her want that carp again. So i am weaning her off it slowly.

Any time she sees the milk come out of the fridge she goes mad as she knows what it is so from time to time i used to give her a little thimble full. I didn't realise how bad it was for cats until recently if I am honest. :o She is too clever for her own good , knowing what blimmin milk is! :rotfl:

Tom said to take her off the wet food gradually and not to make a big change suddenly. I know she will resist the dry for a few days, but when she has ran out of the small amouint of wet, she will soon give into the dry.

Just soaking her litter tray so it is spotless clean - some previous good advice from Jon I think it was?

TRH I am tempted to ask what happened with your kitty but am scared to :o

I told the vet how happy etc she is, and he said it;s great she is, and at he end of the day as long as her quality of life is ok - that's the main thing.

Must take a wee pic and get it on, sounds silly but it's the only way I can measure her up and notice changes.

Thanks you all - all advice listened to and welcomed. Ill try some chicken out :p

Sorry , no energy to fix my typing. Got my redundancy letter today!

  • Hi Zippy,
B****y hell, as if you haven't got enough to contend with. Were you expecting the redundancy notice or it is out of the blue? Either way it's hard to deal with especially at the moment when you're feeling so down about Maggie. Don't know what to say other than I'm thinking about you and hope things take a better turn for you soon.

How's Maggie doing today? Is she back on the dry food again and, if so, is she eating it? Problem with cats is they LOVE milk, but it really isn't good for them so pleased you're not giving her any.

I'll tell you about my cat when Maggie's out of the woods, long story and not related to anything Maggie has, so don't worry about that.

Do put another picture on so we can have a look, she's such a cutie!

Take care, chin up things will get better and big hugs to Maggie x

    Hello Zippy

Positive vibes for you and Maggie. Just poking my nose in here - TRH is correct about the milk, HOWEVER, you can buy specially formulated cat milk, most of the supermarkets do their own [much cheaper], as well as Whiskas and Felix. I use it all the time for kitties. A little amount [not too much to make her sick or upset vets instructions] wouldn't hurt and may perk her up a bit. I reckon at her time of life a wee treat is well deserved. Good wishes.

Likewise, I'm delighted to hear that Maggie is doing so well. She's a lucky girl that she can spend her retirement in such attentive luxury with you.

And likewise, I'm really sorry to hear about your redundancy notice. I hope you get fixed up with something else asap. I'm job hunting at the minute (out of work) and I think that since you're in the Belfast area there will be plenty for you to apply for. Best of luck with that.

Just checked up on this thread for the first time in a few days. I hope Maggie is doing better.

Regarding the litter tray, we use litter tray liners (from Pets At Home) to make the cleaning of the tray itself nothing more than a quick spray and wipe with cleaning spray.

The liners aren't cheap but they certainly help with hygiene.

One of my cats has a really bad problem with dairy products. He got a bit of cheese a couple of times (the first as a treat, the second when he nicked it from the table) and both times he boked. Weirdly, his brother is fine, which is good, as he gets his epilepsy tablets in a tiny bit of cheese every day (it's the easiest way to make sure he takes them). But anyway, avoid the milk with Maggie just to be on the safe side, or get the special cat milk.

Hi All. I am very tired today so quick update.

Mags has been ok - her anti bis finish today and i spoke to the bets earlier. The tabs seem to settle her poos (sorry tmi), so going to get her another course tomorrow. Vets are as bewildered in a way as I am - and i m just monitoring her from day to day kind of thing. I have noticed her back legs going a bit wobbly and the vet said more than likely Arthritis. (another huge shock today)

Ive sort of stayed away from here as if i type this stuff it makes it real and things are just getting on top of me a bit at the minute.

She has been in tip top super form and i took some pics specially for yous. She woke me at 930 sat and sunday (wee madam) and last night came in 3 times in the night.

Today she seems very much in a bit of a daze - or maybe i have just caught her in bad moments. Hoping it's a bad day and that it's not her going downhill even more :(

Had i posted yesterday it would have been a much brighter picture. Today has just not been good.

Being a minx in the back yard - ignore the moss and skanky chair, i need to power hose.... :S

    PLaying huts - he he

    DSC00566.jpg

There are better ones on my phone but it was being silly uploading

Regards the redundancy it was "expected" - i was just a little daunted to see it in writing

Is the job market hopeful? Ive been too scared to look to be honest

I also took a video of herpurring at the brush - have to play it and see how bad my voice sounds as im talking away to her he he . I may put that up... May not!:o

thanks again, for just letting me talk. Pray to buddha Mags is back on form tomorrow. The vet says she may need tabs on an ongoing basis - and at one stage she didnt think we would even get this far. None of it sounds good i know, but Mags happiness and comfort is what I care about .(i think you know what im saying without me having to say it)

Have to go, getting upset. Thanks xxx

Ok today is a new day!

Went to the vets who gave me 3 weeks worth of tabs. He said it will defo help with her white blood cells being low

On thinking she has been a good bit better the past few days (apart from yest but she was tired?)

She has been coming in in the night the past few nights waking me at 3-4am and 7am etc and has woke me up 3-4 days too. In the old days if i left my bedroom door open she would have been in , around my pillow, miaowing, pawing my face - but since she has been sick she hasnt done this - as I have left the door open for her every night. So that is hopefully a good thing and a good sign.

vets were asking about her, and just said to keep a close eye - day by day again so keep all your fingers crossed for me and her.

Ill see if i can get some better pics up tonight if yous want them. I went into the spare room last night ahd gave her her tablet and she was raging with me! Ill not do that again (disturb her peace....and infringe on her rest room!)
