Vet open on bank holiday?

Hi there, wonder if anyone knows of a vet open tomorrow? Not the Vet now serviec which is £103 for a call out alone. But a vets surgery. My little cat's not too well.

Thanks in advance.

Laura

It's a bank holiday not a public holiday so worth phoning around.

Are you in Belfast? Our local vets surgery on the Knock dual carriageway offers a 24hr a day service (I think it's through another vet on the Belmont Road) and I know they wouldn't charge that much.

    Cedar Grove Vets

They've always been great with my mother's numerous cats. If you have any doubts give them a call and they can give advice on whether you should go tonight or leave it until tomorrow. Better to spend a few quid and have a happy moggy than a sleepless night worrying.

Let me know how you get on :o

Unfortunately, they all seem to use Vets now
    Outside normal hours
Emergency service is available through Vets Now Emergency Service situated on Belmont Road, Belfast BT4. They can be contacted on 028 90651729 after
    8.30pm Monday-Friday, 4.30pm Saturday and after 1pm on Sunday.

    Thanks anyway.

Sorry, I didn't know that. It must be a fairly new thing. Pity, because we always used to be able to get seen at Cedar Grove in the evening at short notice. Mrs Hart has been amazing with all my mother's feline friends!

I hope your cat's OK. Once a cat lover, always a cat lover. x

Don't worry, i appreciate the sentiment. Is pretty new to me too. And annoying!

Hmm it is hard to know. She is around 12-13. She has been on prescription food for years - because she gets stones in her belly. Does her well. The vet changed her food and very quickly she has lost a lot of weight. I got her old food again the other day (wed-thu) and thought great. But she now is barely eating. She has a tea spoon of tuna yesterday and is only drinking water. Wont touch her favourite foods so im really worried. Has also had the runs a tiny amount . She has been hiding up in the spare room and is away from me a lot - i know. I got her to sit with me on bed earlier for a few hours. She is beside me now, but i called her when she was on her way back upstairs. She is normally so pritely, lively, cheeky , and a starvo - so for her to turn her nose up at an empty tuna tin - is quite something. She doesnt seem to be in pain, and is sleepign a lot. She hasnt even came into my room - i left my door open 2 nights in a row. Normally she would be trying to get under the blankets and crawl all over my head - she didnt even come in.

I spent most of yesterday crying, ive had her 9 years. Very worried.

  • You could try phoning Cedar Grove in the morning.

It's possible that a change in her diet has upset her digestive system a bit and it could take a while to settle. As long as you can get her to drink water, even small amounts, it's a good sign. If you have any soft treats or favourite food try to tempt her but not too often, maybe just at usual meal times. She's probably just feeling poorly and, like a human, she just wants to isolate herself and have a doze.

When you're stroking her does she purr? If she's receptive to some attention i.e. she doesn't make it clear that she wants to be left alone, if you can get her to purr it should reassure you. As far as I know a cat won't purr if it's not happy.

Although I don't have a cat myself (just various neighbour's cats that want to live with us!), I've grown up with cats and there's always been at least one cat 'at home'. When you have a cat for 17 years they are definately a member of the family. When one of the neighbour's cats felt ill it was us he came to (he curled up in the hall feeling sorry for himself and wouldn't go out) - I had to knock on doors to find out where he lived and tell his owners he wasn't well! A few days later he was back and back to his normal yowling self.

Try not to worry too much. I hope your cat is feeling better soon. Please let me know how she is. x

Zippy, I don't know your situation, but you could call the PDSA to see if they'd be willing to see your cat. I know they are supposed to be for people on limited income, however if you offered to pay and told them how much of an emergency it is.

I really don't like the sound of what you've said, it does sound quite serious to me. If the PDSA aren't able to help then perhaps you should just bite the bullet and pay the emergency vet fee. Also it'd be a good idea to not feed any tuna, it's far too salty and if there's a problem with your cat's kidneys then it's really the last thing she needs.

    Let us know what happens.

But the vet doesn't have to provide the OOH service themselves. Often, the OOH service is simply to refer to another vets that do offer 24 hour cover, such as Vets Now at Earlswood.
