Zippy, I don't know your situation, but you could call the PDSA to see if they'd be willing to see your cat. I know they are supposed to be for people on limited income, however if you offered to pay and told them how much of an emergency it is.

I really don't like the sound of what you've said, it does sound quite serious to me. If the PDSA aren't able to help then perhaps you should just bite the bullet and pay the emergency vet fee. Also it'd be a good idea to not feed any tuna, it's far too salty and if there's a problem with your cat's kidneys then it's really the last thing she needs.

    Let us know what happens.
Hiya. it was the vet told me to try her with tuna (the Vet now vet), but she isnt interested in it anyway, not gave her any since saturday. She has just went outside and drank a good 5mm of rain water from a pint glass. She is a wee minx, won't drink from the tap , but i put a clean glass out every day which would just be topped up with rain water, so she has juts had a big massive drink for about 4 minutes ? She must be very thirsty. Also came down and sat on my knee which she hasnt done in about 4-5 days - so that's a good sign. Just going to take her to the vets tomorrow./

It's hard to know as i live on my own and haven't had many round as ive been sick, so no one else has really seen her to give me their opinion!

She is out in the back yard sniffing, but I think her back legs seem a bit weak - but so much of this all could be down to her not eating as she is weak from that? Or am i being hopeful.

Thanks for the concern and advice, it's been a nightmare. If the vets says to put her down, it will break my heart.

Also - vets who are 24 hour seem to use Vets now - a relatively new thing in my experience. Their minimum call out is £120.59 or thereabouts. Any vet ive rang today refer to the vets now number.

You could try phoning Cedar Grove in the morning.

It's possible that a change in her diet has upset her digestive system a bit and it could take a while to settle. As long as you can get her to drink water, even small amounts, it's a good sign. If you have any soft treats or favourite food try to tempt her but not too often, maybe just at usual meal times. She's probably just feeling poorly and, like a human, she just wants to isolate herself and have a doze.

When you're stroking her does she purr? If she's receptive to some attention i.e. she doesn't make it clear that she wants to be left alone, if you can get her to purr it should reassure you. As far as I know a cat won't purr if it's not happy.

Although I don't have a cat myself (just various neighbour's cats that want to live with us!), I've grown up with cats and there's always been at least one cat 'at home'. When you have a cat for 17 years they are definately a member of the family. When one of the neighbour's cats felt ill it was us he came to (he curled up in the hall feeling sorry for himself and wouldn't go out) - I had to knock on doors to find out where he lived and tell his owners he wasn't well! A few days later he was back and back to his normal yowling self.

Try not to worry too much. I hope your cat is feeling better soon. Please let me know how she is. x
Thanks Jenny. She is purring but she is a very very happy kitty, so would purr regardless of being sick - albeit not as much. Just went up to see her there, and the purring started immediately. She also pawed my face today which she does in affection and to stop me moving, so that was more than I've had for days too.

I'm so mixed up about it all. One minute I think she is fine, next Im bawling my eyes out at the thought of taking her to the vets - and them giving me that news

Hi Zippy - I'm on my own with kitties too, so know what it's like. My vet's great though, doesn't even charge me if I go in in a big flap with a kitty who turns out to have nothing wrong with him/her.

It might be an idea to keep an eye on your cat's output, ie pee and poo. Also if she's not eating you could try warming up some food for her as that helps make it more smelly and therefore more attractive. Attractive to your cat that is, you might get the dry bokes.

It does sound like she has perked up a lot, so hopefully it was just a tummy upset after the change in food.

Hope it goes ok at the vet's tomorrow. Don't make yourself go grey thinking of the worst, the vet is there to preserve your pet's life.

Again thanks for the help. I know i shouldnt stress but I can't help it. Very little ouput, she had tiny bit of runs yesterday, and more the day before but nothing today so far. Poor thing, I am watching her like a hawk, trying not to make it obvious.

She does seem to be licking her lips a lot, only will only drink water outside -and im scared of letting her out in case she goes off to die. Possibly silly I know.

Also just found out she is more around the 16 mark - spoke to my neighbour and we worked it out backwards (my cat lived in this house before i did, then another owner, now me for 9 years). So I am trying not to be even more worried :o

It's good to just be able to talk about it online, silly as it sounds. Shes not desperately in pain but s very thin. I can feel every bone.

Edit - she has just eaten a big chunk of chicken - from soup so was moist. Seemed to love that. Also eat the rest of the ham i put out earlier, and a couple of chunks of dry food. Yay!

  • Hope it goes well at the vets tomorrow.

Probably bet not to give her ham. It's loaded with salt and presevatives. You can't beat a little bit of freshly cooked chicken or turkey as a tempting treat ... our neighbourhood cats can smell it cooking and line up at the kitchen door in anticipation!

She has had half a slice. I feel stupid not thinking of that, its the bloody vets fault.

She is loving the chicken. Had another bit and wee bit of dried food. My friend who got me her is calling over tonight - so will know more when he sees her. He's not seen her in a while.

She came downstairs and sat on my knee earlier for some hugs, and came in to see me when i was in bed watching tele, so thats more than she has done in days. Possibly a week.

Fingers crossed. Sorry for being a cat bore.

  • Hi,
Just wanted to say that I really feel for you. I went through the same thing a couple of years ago with my 17-year old cat. Didn't know whether I was doing the right thing for him or not.

When my cat was really ill, chicken was what my lovely vet advised me to feed him - it's very bland and settles their stomachs. Cost me a fortune but I couldn't have cared less as long as he was eating someting.

Good luck for tomorrow, will be thinking about you and hope all goes OK.

There is no such thing as a cat bore! I go on another forum and literally talk about cat poo as it's dedicated to a particular intestinal condition which one of my cats has. THAT I don't tell to many people, lol!

I only mentioned about the output so that you can tell the vet when you see him/her tomorrow. I've felt really stupid when I've been asked the question at the vet and didn't know the answer. If the vet doesn't ask the question give the information anyway.

Fingers crossed for you and your cat at the vet's. Your cat is very lucky to have someone who cares for her and looks after her so well.

That's a good point. I might write a list to take to vets, that way i dont forget anything.

She has just had more dried food. My friend said she has obviously got very thin, and he can see how weak she is. her back leg - one in particular seems a bit weaker than the rest.

She is sitting a few metres away from me purring after having eaten.

I couldnt help but laugh at your poo anectdotes Snowy!

Heres pics if I can indulge you for a second.
