At the risk of being accused of dragging up old threads
(please don't hurt me mr), a further 10 arrests and more street violence/protests.

According to the article, the Communities minister feels that right wing groups are trying to provoke violence on the streets.
In addition, this story highlights other "extremist" crimes increasing...

In addition, the Unions are now raising concerns about the potential effects of unemployment rising much further.
Granted that in the main they are looking to protect their members in their statement, however in fairness, the historical points they raise are relevant.

Public spending cuts could plunge Britain into a double-dip recession, driving unemployment above 4m and threatening to provoke riots on the streets, the country's most senior union leader said yesterday.............

So, an update.
Still thinking there are a lot of unhappy/angry people out there, case in point yesterday. Violent confrontation, aggressive scenes, reporters in the media have commented that there were members both sides of the confrontation who appeared intent on some forms of violence & disruption.
In hard times, when feeling down, opressed, percieving forms of injustice (rightly or wrongly), it can be easier in such moments to be more open to militancy.
I do worry if a W type double dip downturn happens that we could be seeing more of the above, at least similar in intent. It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Here's an odd one. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/north_east/8306659.stm
Now in addition to this, I read 2 other stories where one partner murdered the other (IIRC both were due to finding out about adultery).
I'm not a massive news hog, so to see 3 such similar stories in 2 days worries me, and that says nothing about the unreported stuff.
Perhaps the strain is showing in more personal/individual ways?
Also, with the apparent increase in adultery & the subsequent crime by the "wronged" partner, what does this say for the wantitnow" society? Monogamy is gone, because of people wanting more than they have in their relationship. But also, the revenge by the other partner - is it overly severe? Is it an implication of ownership?
And add in this - shocking. & the perpetrators recieved 6 and 8 month sentences http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/manchester/8300256.stmIt's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.0 -
Just a piece of anecodtal evidence here...
I was at a party on Saturday night (consisting of junior/F2 doctors) and every single person I spoke to was putting in job applications to New Zealand. Really seemed like there'll be a mass exodus.0 -
