The Good
First Direct - no real issues with them, with the exception of how they insist on sending my cards out via a tracked delivery service or collect at branch.
Kaupthing (RIP) - smooth opening, paid lots of interest, good website, UK callcentre etc
The Bad
Natwest - kept on sending me activation codes that were out of date by the time they reached me, 3 times over.
Lloyds TSB - had fraud on my credit card and it took nearly 2 months to sort it out. They also kept on sending card and bank statements to my old address, despite me telling them to change it on a certain date, weeks in advance before I moved. Also after changing the address, they sent the replacement card to my old address ... still!!!
Barclays & Citibank - the Indian callcentres are useless!!!! They never seem to have the ability to deviate from the script. I dread phoning any of these organisations.
The Ugly
Halifax - yes they seem to be cropping up frequently in this thread! I don't bank with them, but my late mother did and it was a nightmare to deal with the winding up of her accounts. They managed to 'lose' the death certificate for 2 weeks and !!!! it up!0 -
I've had a Current & Savings Account with Bank of Scotland/Halifax since I was 16, now 24! I've the used the Current account on and off for this time, the savings account has had a small amount in it.
Never had any issues with them, always very helpful - occassionally a little slow at sending things out.
I do the majority of my banking with Smile. I'm not smiling as much anymore - I'm currently reverting to using the HBOS account as my main account.0 -

Good luck - you'll need it
Worth considering 1st Direct/HSBC/Ulster etc as they get good reviews..... put it this way, HBOS is one of the worst (after NatWest of course!)....

Halifax - excellent, never had any problems.
Nationwide - again, excellent, had a slight issue a few years back but I certainly forgive them for that, as the rest of their service has made up for it.
Natwest - awful. I've had two accounts there, for about a year, and have three 'concerns' registered with them where they have messed up in one way or another (two related to data protection and the other about the £50 cashback ... thread about that on the savings board).0 -
Bad to the point of defying description - Alliance & Leicester (as previously stated this outfit have such a bad reputation that Martin should really add a warning to his recommendation of this account).
Good - no real experience as been with A&L too long but am going to try First Direct now.0 -
I must say i've never had a problem with Alliance and Leicester my only complaint is their lack of branches there is only one local to my work and nothing else around. I also never had any problems at all with Halifax I know not a very popular choice on here.Sealed pot challenge - £400 no.4910

I don't think that's right that Halifax isn't a popular choice on here.
I'm clearly bored tonight, as I've just added up all the banks people have never had a problem with, and Halifax/BOS is considered the best by a long way. This is how it goes...
16: Halifax/BOS
9: Nationwide & RBS/Natwest
8: First Direct
7: Lloyds TSB
5: Yorkshire BS, Barclays & HSBC
4: Egg, A&L, Smile, Co-op
3: ICICI
2: Kent Reliance, Norwich & Peterborough, Citibank, Cater Allen

That does rather stand out as some sort of service leader .... although a small sample does somewhat affect things. I've highlighted the main high street providers above. The omssion of Abbey really speaks volumes for them!I don't think that's right that Halifax isn't a popular choice on here.
