Hiya - thanks for your help, i'll send a letter off and see what they say.... its confusing but others say they have waited 3 months for an account to be opened lol - is this normal (gulp)!

No. To my understanding, the team is both going through a revamp and swamped with customers for a variety of reasons (no government funds has swung a lot of people to us and HSBC, for example).
    What would William Shatner do?
  • no government funds has swung a lot of people to us .

I must admit I was tempted to open an account with Barclays for that exact reason.

Hey whats wrong with abbey? im just about to switch from a co-op basic account to an abbey current, with a £100 bonus thing (doubt i'll get it)

but to co-incide with the thread,
HSBC - useless, shut my account because of three late direct debits which bounced (long story but not my fault) which made me late with bills and gave me a default which i had to sort out and wasted two months of my life.

Co-op - ok if your stuck and cant get a current account, had no issues but internet banking is a bit basic, does what you need it to do though

Natwest - pathetic - applied for an account, firstly accepted then declined by letter after being given account number etc, due to an error on electoral register.

Abbey - yet to be decided - ow gawd help me :D

The general consensus appears to be that although Abbey provide perfectably acceptable services, they entirely fail in their complaint handling and resolving issues, suffer from poor internal communication, etc.

Abbey - don't do it... don't do it... don't do it!!!

They are AWFUL. They won't process the simplest thing (eg. change of address, request to change from one account type to another) on-line, over the phone or by post. Everything requires a visit to branch. Fine if you live near one, but to go into mine it takes a 60 mile round trip, £8 parking fees, and a day off work because branch staff "can't carry out those kind of actions on a Saturday". Grrrrrrrr.

They regularly miscalculate interest payments etc, transfer money from/to incorrect accounts, and who knows what they do with incoming funds - it takes four days for money to transfer from my A&L account to my Abbey account - both banks part of the same banking group.

If keeping my money under the mattress was an option, I'd take it!

Rant over... feeling slightly better now... phew.
