Well at that stage, the iPhone had some 30,000 apps available.

We're not arguing that point I'm just letting you know as before all I could find was 800.
That is an interesting article (and I like the codenames - who wouldn't want to run Cupcake on their phone?), and he does have a valid point that the iPhone OS is only designed to run on Apple hardware. But it just reflects a different way of doing business rather than an inherent flaw. Windows has a much larger market share than OS X for instance, yet proportionally Apple make a lot more profit than Microsoft. Having an enormous market share has never been Apple's primary goal; making piles of cash is.

I'll not get into the discussion about companies main goal being cash.

    No one said it was.
Fair enough, but I'm sure you understand the attraction of having an automatically updated playlist that has all my 5 star rated songs (or whatever) in it.

I can understand it and if I was interested in rating all my music I'd benefit from it, but I just play music. Mainly use rhythumbox.
There's no DRM in iTunes music anymore (in fact, Apple were instrumental in the push to remove DRM from music), and I can appreciate that iTunes' feature-set has grown over the years, but lots of them are very good.

I thought they offered DRM free music at a premium.

No, they don't offer any DRM'd music at all.

They did originally offer DRM free music at a higher bitrate for a slightly greater cost while they were transitioning, but it's all DRM free now.
