  • surely the fact that the seller wouldn't arrange collection via the husband , who has rung him as he requested , should ring alarm bells?!

OP has said she is partially deaf and not confident on the phone so has got her husband to ring instead , fair enough and has basically done as the seller wanted but the seller only wants to speak to her? very odd imo

If I were in her shoes and a seller refused to speak with my husband to arrange collection I would tell him to stick the furniture where the sun don't shine , no way would I be bullied into talking to him on the phone and then go to his house.

I've completed many collection only transactions on ebay , both as a seller and a buyer , and have never spoke to anyone on the phone. The messaging system is there to complete transactions and I personally find it easier to type directions down rather than reap them off over the phone , easier for the person collecting the item too as they then have them written down rather than trying to scrawl them down during a phonecall.

I agree wholeheartedly with you entire post, but the last part is an especially excellent point in combatting the idiotic "He wants her to phone so that he can give her directions." argument.

Indeed there are, but despite your conjecture on this sellers behalf perhaps I too am suffering from an empathy bypass but I cannot conceive of any reason for his behaviour that I find credible, logical or reasonable.

The sellers refusal to name a time and place in the first instance is the material point. Everything that follows is because of his repeated attempts to coerce Jacks into phoning him.

Also , if the only reason he wanted her to ring was to give directions , why wouldn't he say so? It's the fact that he's just repeatedly sending "call me" that I find odd.

Surely a normal person would put "please call to arrange collection" or "please call so I can give you directions"

We may be misjudging the seller but I certainly wouldn't be comfy in the OPs position , more so after the seller refusing to deal with her husband , that really does ring alarm bells for me.

What's that got to do with anything unless you're enjoying having a go at Jacks so much that you're looking for another reason to have a go at her.

I'm not having a go at all - she stated that she does not provide her address and phone number on contact details - I stated this is against ebay policies - the seller cannot contact her by phone as she has failed to provide a number - I am simply stating that she can be reported by the seller for failing to do so. (perhaps she didn't know this was against policy therefore it is being helpful to her not 'having a go')

    Okay, an update.

But first, thank you so so much to everybody who posted to say that they would prefer to deal by email as a well for whatever reason.

It made me feel much better as I had been really surprised by the more attacking responses to what I thought was quite an innocuous question but I s'pose as DoWhatULove so amusingly pointed out I did sort of stick a "Kick Me sign to my own back. (Thanks for the giggle cherub :D)

After refusing to make arrangements with my husband, the seller asked for my details from eBay last night.

This is no call for alarm because rather than having void details - as one poster seemed to get her knickers bewilderingly in a twist about - eBay have details which are not my home address and home telephone number.

This is the buying account that I use for collection items and those sellers do not need my home address.

This morning Hubby was telling my dad all about it and he said in his own inimitable style "effing people won't answer a simple effing question - where's this ****er live?

The seller's address is in his payment details so dad stomped off carrying a print out of the auction and cash. He returned exactly 20 minutes later with the item.

The seller answered the door in shorts, had eBay open on his laptop when my dad was there (he works from home apparently) and the excuse he gave my dad for his short messages was that he was probably replying to them on his mobile phone so he kept it brief.

My dad said he seemed entirely normal except for when he was trying to convince my dad to give him my phone number "just so he could say thank you".

"Not going to happen son" said my fab dad. :D

    Okay so two freakazoids in 6000 transactions - that's not a bad ratio I s'pose! :rolleyes::D

It's not relevant or helpful though is it?

And talk about black and white thinking.

If I don't give my home details I must give no details???? Can you even do that?

My details n this account are c/o my solicitor and an 0845 number which goes straight to answer phone on which people can leave voice messages, but as I have said the seller doesn't need those details.

Ooh yes I think so. I have thanked everybody who was supportive - and I really don't fancy chatting with the others - so that's it for me.

    Whatever happened to Customer service?
    Indeed. :D

It seems this particular seller is a great believer in customer service.

He expects the customer to serve him on command.
