Looks like Aberdeen will have a glut of window cleaners, shortly...

80 workers facing axe from Aberdeen oil company

    Oil firm set to fold

" AN ABERDEEN oil firm looked set to fold this afternoon with the potential loss of 80 jobs.
Administrators were expected to be called into Stable Oilfield Services Limited firm because of cash-flow problems.
It was understood the company had a bulging order book but was unable to pay for materials needed for work because it couldn’t get bank loans.
Around 80 jobs could be lost at the firm, which has two bases in Aberdeen and offices around the world.
An offshore union leader this afternoon said he expected more North-east jobs to go as a result of falling oil prices.
No one from the company was available to comment.
A rescue operation was launched over the weekend as the firm – based at Kirkhill Industrial Estate in Dyce and wit
h an office in Aberdeen’s Murcar area – struggled to find investors.
But today bosses had been unable to come up with the cash to keep the company afloat and administrators were expected to be called in later.
Jake Molloy, of the RMT union in Aberdeen, said: “There are a lot of job losses going on across the sector.”
“It is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. It’s inevitable with the reduced oil price. I would hope forward-looking companies would plan for this.”
Stable Oilfield Services Limited specialises in the rental, manufacture and supply of drilling equipment around the world.
The company operates offices in Scotland, England, Norway, Canada, Libya, Dubai, Singapore and China.
It was unclear today if jobs outside of Aberdeen would be affected.
The company was described as “one of the most innovative and dynamic” firms involved in the design and manufacture of drilling equipment for the oil and gas industry.
Less than two months ago the company re-branded itself from Stable to Stable Oilfield Services as it tried to grow its business in the sale, rental and manufacture of oil field drilling equipment.
In February the company said it was on track for achieving 50% of total turnover from international sales following a £2 million investment in global expansion in 2008. "

Our window cleaner is a traditional bucket, ladder and wiper guy. He charges £10 and it takes him no more than 15 minutes. He works for someone else though so I don't know how much of that he keeps.

Am a bit worried about my sash windows now though...!

H & S got involved a while ago and you need the pole reach systems now I believe, maybe not if a one man band??

If you are reasonably intelligent, you can put together a DIY backpack pole reach system for £300.

    400 customers with a 2wk re-clean
    600 customer with a 3wk re-clean

Will make you a continual £1000pw
What planet are you on? We have our windows cleaned once every two months, and I begrudge paying that. If times were harder it would be one of the first things I would stop paying for.

A backpack pole reach system contains a pump, a battery, and enough water to do a house. The pump is connected to a pole, with a brush on the end. A backpack pole reach system is the cheapest form of pole reach system, then you have trolleys, then vehicle mounted. Most people start with either a backpack system or trolley mounted system, since these are substantially cheaper than vehicle mounted. In practice, if you are going for a vehicle mounted system you still need a backpack/trolley system, since many houses are not accessable for vehicles.

You can see I've spoken to a lot of window cleaners in my time ;)

so this geordie bloke was, at a fiver a go, cleaning 38 houses windows a day, seven days a week. rubbish.

or 60 houses a day if he didn't work weekends. so, in a working day of say, 8 hours, he would clean 8 houses an hour - or 1 every 7.5 minutes???

utter rubbish. he must be a liar.

    .

Um, he had employees. Hire a minimum wage grunt, who does 3 houses an hour, and you have yourself a profitable business.
