  • Hi Sarah

I am a debt and benefits adviser so might be able to help.

I previously worked for a Local Authority dealing with Housing/Council Tax Benefit claims.

Wish I knew enough about the benefits system to be of some use. Maybe tomorrow you can talk to a real live person who can tell you what your entitled to.

Hope OH surfaces and pulls his weight with the letter. Is he depressed? If so is he getting help? I know he hasn't really helped himself by missing appointments etc.

    Hope things start improving soon.

He may well be depressed Jellie, he has been in the past (before my time) but I'm not sure he will a) admit to it or b) actually go to the appt anyway!
Hi have just been catching up, you have your hands full at the moment. The entitledto site is ok if situations are straightforward, but if you are not a council/RSL tenant, it can be such a minefield. Its no wonder that they stop and start peoples benefits at random due to change of circumstances.
Do your local council or CAB have a benefits advisor, may be better to speak to a real person.
I take it that OH job loss was unexpected and that there is some sort of process that he needs to go through. Know what you mean about not going into detail, as I found out by accident that someone on here worked in the same place I used to, so really glad I never went into detail about my old job and why I left.
You need to concentrate on yourself and your son, work out all the options and find out which is better for him.

    Hope it all works out.

Yes it was unexpected Gilli... and we are not council/HA tenants... thats where it all went wrong on the website:rotfl:

Hi Sarah. The benefits system is really hard to fathom out. My OH recently made a claim and the local job centre has been worse than useless: losing forms, giving him the wrong forms, misinforming him about his entitlements, and on the last two times he went there, the office has been closed when it should have been open. It's been a whole two months and we still don't have a clear answer about whether he's entitled to anything. Sorry! That is not very encouraging I know! I hope you have more luck with it than us.

Have you talked about the situation with his MiL. It would be good to know for sure whether his going there for a while is an option, and whether she might make sure he looks after Connor so you could lose those nursery fees.

I will be having a serious conversation with MiL, because I can't do this on my own!

Just wanted to say again guys, thank you all for your support, it really means a lot to be able to unload on here, especially as I know OH doesn't listen to me at all, and I can't talk to anyone else about it!

  • No news on the benefits Jellie, I haven't sent the PM yet :o been a very busy day at work.

Quite weird (I think!) on the OH front today..... he got up as I was going to bed at midnight last night, but instead of getting into bed as I was getting out, as per normal, he was in the shower and dressed before I got up. He walked to nursery with me and DS, then went to the shop and came home. Has has signed up with three agencies and applied for various jobs online.... I nearly had to scrape myself off the floor as he told me!! He's also written an letter for work, and taken advice on the situation! And, as if that wasn't enough, he's phoned the Dr this morning, and has to call back tomorrow for an appt!
According to him, he 'had an epiphany' last night, and decided that he's not 'going to let the bastewards get to me'.... I didn't really know what to say after that!! Obviously doesn't resolve the current money issues, but its a positive step in the right direction.... bless him!

Thats it really. Starting to get bogged down at work but nothing new there!
