What’s this about? They’ve more bolt-ons than Frankenstein; outrageously, budget airline ‘extras’ include taking bags, checking in or even just paying. Yet be it Ryanair, easyJet, Flybe or BMI Baby, this guide has tricks to beat those nasty charges, from special payment routes to baggage allowance busting.

The first point of call is read the full Beat Budget Airline Charges guide. Then having found the best survey sites, this discussion is specifically to talk about feedback and tips for the survey site

We are regular users of easy jet. Try these..
telephone for ' free' for those with talk talk and free calls to non o8 type numbers, 01582700036. This is a customer service number i use for all my flight queries and change to bookings, extra luggage etc.
When I book flights for the 3 of us in our family, you actually get an allowance of 20kg EACH. It's the number of bags you pay for. So do this..take one HUGE suitcase, and as you have a 60kg allowance you are actually allowed to put 32kgs in it (the max amount for one bag). This combined with 3 very well packed hand cases gives us plenty of space. And for those of you not bringing the contents of the huge case back (I have an apartment I have been kitting out from UK as stuff here is cheaper) I pack in huge laundry bags, and pay one way only, sfuffing the empty folded laundry bags in my hand luggage when I come home. I took 4 sun loungers out with me a couple of weeks ago!
  • I booked online yesterday with easyjet and their credit card charges are actually 10.99 per transaction, 2.95 for debit cards and free with a visa electron. How can they get away with such huge charges???

    Thanks that's a good tip :T

Thanks for the tip re the phone number. I am confused as to the baggage allowance. I have booked seats for 23 people in November and the travel agent told me it was a max 20kgs per person. When I asked if we could add extra to some of the cases, therefore lessening the amount to be paid for baggage, I was told it's against health and safety for the staff to lift more than 20kgs, so I had to pay baggage for 23 ppl. I now know different for the future. Thanks for that!

Regarding the exchange rate and whic currency you should pay in. I'm glad this has been noted - only pay in pounds, not euros! The exchange rate is terrible. HOwever, this is easy to avoid - you don't need to include an outward bound flight with your booking as Martin suggests.

When you get to the page where they show you what flight you've chosen (the page where you have to remove the automatically added insurance and tell them how many bags you'll have), at the top you get the option to change currency. It's a drop down menu just above the flight details. Simply change it to pounds from euros and you'll save yourself about 10% on the euro price.

Tried this one, BUT it won't change it to the cheaper £ sterling price!

    Saturday 10 October

Ibiza to London Lutonflight 2092; dep. Sat 10 Oct 00:55
    arr. Sat 10 Oct 02:20
    £9.84per person
    (incl. taxes and charges)

    £12.05per person

Always start with a return from the UK and delete the outbound flight from the basket.

Please be very careful with MoneySaving Newbie comments that have a low post count, some of them aren't actually double checking what they say with the relevant websites.

Yes you do to get the cheaper £ sterling price, after removing the outbound flight from the basket before going to the next step.
