What’s this about? They’ve more bolt-ons than Frankenstein; outrageously, budget airline ‘extras’ include taking bags, checking in or even just paying. Yet be it Ryanair, easyJet, Flybe or BMI Baby, this guide has tricks to beat those nasty charges, from special payment routes to baggage allowance busting.

The first point of call is read the full Beat Budget Airline Charges guide. Then having found the best survey sites, this discussion is specifically to talk about feedback and tips for the survey site

  • Am I unlucky or has anyone else had problems with BMI babys On line check in? On both my recent out going and return flights the website would not accept my log in details even though I was reading them from my flight confirmation email. After 3 attempts the system locks out. The website says if you have problems to email them, but I can't find how to do it. I did eventually manage to log in and sort it but it makes one wonder if this is a ruse to get one to call on the premium rate phone line. If you do have to phone try one of these standard rate numbers 01332 854858 (Customer service helpdesk) 01509 686628 (On line tech' support) or 01332 854000, 01332 854321, 01158 517006. Oh and 01332 854534 for refunds.
  • I am wondering if anyone can give me some advice,my mother was booked on a BMI flight today and when she arrived at the airport was told as she hadn't put her full name on the booking she would not be allowed to fly,she had provided all passport details as required but the name in the booking was different to her passport-it was just her initial and surname. She was charged a name change fee of 35 euro and had to buy another ticket so she could fly!My husband managed to negotiate a discounted ticket having paid for the ticket before and got that taken off the bill-all in all she had to fork out another 148 euro.Has this happened to anyone else and if so what did you do? I am so angry, as they took her luggage off the plane on the way over and she had to wait in for a whole day for it to be delivered and now this! Any advice gratefully received thanks

This is from the bmibaby site and appears directly above where you put in the details
Please enter the details of the passengers who will be flying, exactly as they appear on their passports or other photo ID. Entering any of the names incorrectly may result in a name change fee being applied or passengers being refused travel. Please note that initials are not acceptable.

I think this is quite common...I am not sure what you can do as it is clear on their site
  • Thanks Caz-I did check today but when I booked her flight in Sept I am sure the form was different as it is quite obvious now that you have to fill in the details.
Ihave looked and can't see anywhere that you have to purchase another ticket as well as pay the name change fee(which we were wiling to do realising that we had probably made a mistake by not putting her full name in) She and I are certainly not flying with them again! :-(

It sounds like they have taken this to the extreme
If a ticket is booked in the name of Fred Bloggs and you want to change it to David Smith then there is indeed a charge for the name change PLUS the difference in the fare between original fare and the current fare (this is to stop people buying up tons of cheap tickets and selling them on for profit)

"Please note that name changes can only be made via the bmibaby call centre and are subject to an administration fee of £25 (€35) plus an applicable fare upgrade per passenger per flight"

so if originally paid £50 and now £150 the fee would be £25 + £100

However in your case you would have hoped they could have been a little more understanding given that this was not a name change to change the passenger but correcting an error made in the booking.
Did she fly with bmibaby on the original flight with the same ticket details...not sure whether, if they did not charge on that leg but did on this, helps your case or not
  • Hi Caz-she had no problem on the way over, the girl who checked her in only looked at her passport as all the passport details had been entered online.I am going to write to them, trading standards and anybody else I can think of.Even if we can't get a refund its worth warning people that this happens, and also trying to get something done about it.I can't believe that 6 missing letters cost us 148 euros! Also when trying to locate my mum's missing luggage the phone number they gave us charged 65p per minute-talk about adding insult to injury!!!

LOOKS LIKE I'M IN TROUBLE.... Thanks for the discussion related to extra charges for minor difference of name details (BMI Baby) I am due to fly with BMI Baby next Thurs 25 March so I checked out my online booking confirmation. I made my booking end of Jan 2010 and gave my commonly used forename Chris instead of Christopher, and also ommited my middle name. In Mid March I provided my passport details in my full name but ommited my middle Name which is on the passport (Least I thought I listed it but it does not appear on the printout). I paid by Visa credit card using my full name and middle initial only.. It is now only 8 days before I fly and I have opted to check in online which I do not need to do for another 6/7 days. I beleive I was reasonably vigilant in supplying the correct information. Any advice on avioding these horendous name change fees that have caught other passengers out

Can you advise which Visa Electron card you have found which works with BMI? Having just been charged more for luggage, check and paying by debit card more than I actually paid for the flight I am keen to avoid this charge at least in future

All Visa Electron cards will work with BMIBaby.

Halifax have a basic account that issues the card:

I booked a flight to Edinburgh from Cardiff for the 23rd of July last week and it turns out that I won't be able to make it, I thought no problem I'll just re-schedule it...well blow me down (I mean something else really!) it's going to cost me 87 quid to do that!

60 quid to change a booking online plus the fare revisions - it's just taking the pi$$ considering that the fight only cost 97 quid in the first place!

I was also delayed at Cardiff Airport for 7 hours by BMIbaby and they offered a 5 pound voucher as compensation - which I did not take.

I genreally like the service of the BMI baby flights but their business practices really boil my blood.

I'm considering going for the compensation but I've read that BMIbaby just simply fob people off

    Any advice?
