The answer to this is so incredibly easy. If you can afford it then order whatever you want, drink wahtever you want and the split the bill equally. Unless you go for a REALLY expensive meal you're generally talking a few quid. Get over it. If someone doesn't drink at all then...in fact, I can't even be arsed. This is a dull thread getting duller. For people who have an issue they need to find a way to resolve it that makes them happy. The second post hit the nail on the head so I'll shut up.
And if, you know, your history...

When my wife and i go out with friends, one of us usually just picks up the whole tab.

Next time we go out, another couple does the same.

The other thing I hate is when you have offered to pay for the whole thing for someone because: a) its a special occasion or b) you have won a little money and want to treat someone, and they immediately take the mickey by ordering all the expensive items and having starters and puddings too because they know you're paying! Especially when you have been out with them before and know they don't normally do this! Its very rude if you ask me!

But OP can't afford to eat and drink whatever they want as they have been made redundant hence ordering cheaper options

Anyhow I've quite enjoyed reading this thread - gives some insight in to the minds of others and their dining out experiences if nothing else :D
  • Eat at restaurants with set menu prices, pay your drinks bills at the bar. There you go, sorted it for ya.

Two of the husbands asked if we were splitting the bill and as soon as someone said yes they ordered the most expensive items on the menu! I remember one of them ordered a £22 main in a restaurant where most of the mains were in the £6-10 range!

A single friend of mine went out with two couples once and at the end of the night the two couples decided it would be easier to just split the bill three ways! Even if the bill had been split five ways she would have been out of pocket as she could not drink as she was driving whereas one person from each couple was able to drink. Splitting the bill three ways would have meant she would have been subsidising the couples to the tune of about £40!

Those two reasons above are exactly why I am so anti, lets just split the bill x ways:mad:

babelfish-That was the point I was trying to make ages ago, you put it so much better. Our friends weren't splitting the bill cos they had 1 less main meal but that ignored people who had had an extra main meal but drunk far less expensive drinks than themselves. Cos I was the only one sober (drinking tap water, I was pregnant) I was the only 1 noticed. I didn't say anything cos they were renting my house from me at the time and I didn't want to turn it into a row and lose them as tenants.:rotfl: Husband said afterwards that I should have told him as he would have told them that they should be chipping in cos of their drinks bill.

I think you also need to be careful about the cost of drinks as whilst there's a vast difference between a jug of free tap water and double shorts, soft drinks can cost as much as 1/2 a lager or a small glass of wine (at least here it does).
