  • Hi,
I know it's easy to say, but hard to practice, but I think it helps if you can ignore the phone ringing, dial 1471 and if it's a number that you recognise return the call. If it's a friend they'll understand if you tell them why you couldn't answer and in time, the cold calling will cease.
Others have advised to subscribe to caller display, but why should you have to bear the expense of vetting calls?
Perhaps I'm fortunate to be so layed back, or placid, that I'm almost comatose, but just try to be calm.
Please don't reply lambasting me for being so naive, it does pay in the end.
    Bill.

Tried that. The phone rings until it times out, then they ring straight back! I did 1471, but the number was withheld.

  • I'm same as most of you, ex directory, registered with TPS; and get these irritating little people constantly ringing.
    I think I have a possible solution.

It appears that N Power are the company these twerps are touting for; so I suggest that everyone goes to N Powers website and fills in the complaints form; you don't have to be a customer to use it. I have done that today; informing them I am taking legal advice(bluff) and reporting THEM to TPS(true).

If everyone starts doing that and pressurising N Power maybe they will stop.

As an matter of interest, how many people are ex N Power customers, we are?
  • We keep getting these too, I've told them my husband works for BG and so is up on what's cheap etc but they constantly speak through me.

Very annoying, I will remember if they call again to go onto the NPower site and complain.

My advice to anyone receiving cold calls is to waste their time. If you're not doing anything anyway then have some fun and act like a thick customer. Ask them a million and one inane questions - "Do your vans have pretty logos on them? Are they pink vans, I love pink?"

When it comes to the nitty gritty give false names and addresses so that they are believable. Spell the name in the most convoluted manner possible, eg Andrew should by Andyrew. Then launch into an explanation of your name from your illegitimate Irish cousin who saved a ship from sinking. Make the address equally absurd. When these nobs sniff a sale they throw all common sense out of the window.

Every second you spend with them stops them from harassing someone else - think of it as a community service.

Then when you've had enough or can't think of anything to say, hang up.

  • I have also received a couple of dodgy calls from these jokers.... will be complaining to Npoweer.

Many of these nuisance callers are simply working from sheets of numbers. Even if you are ex-directory and a total stranger to them, you can still get a call. The call centres rent 'calling time' to a variety of clients. Sometimes they will call for company X, sometimes company Y.

They know perfectly well that their calls are unwelcome, so be as unpleasant as you like. The higher their staff turnover, the less likely they are to stay in business.

  • I'm registered with the TPS but it doesn't seem to work with these people.
I usually ask them to spell the name of the company they are calling from (energy savers). Once i ask for the telephone number they usually hang up PDQ. The frequency has dropped to once every couple of months, still frustrating, but it can be fun .....:D

I've been having these calls for a while now, they insist that my energy supplier is British Gas, when I say that I'm with NPower they usually apologise and go away...had a call a few days ago, and asked to be taken off their call list...phone was put down on me! Tonight....when the caller TOLD me I was with British Gas and I said that no I wasn't I was with NPower.....his reply was..." YOU ARE LYING!" I insisted that I was with NPower, he repeated that I WAS LYING....I'm registered with TPS....are we sure that these people are working for NPower....might have to have a big complain if so

We've recently been receiving these calls, about one a week for the past month. Were both ex-directory and TPS but this makes no difference to the call centre. When questioned why they want to know the info or telling them we will not disclose personal information to an unknown company they hang up.
It's starting to become a nuisance now. Any successes in stopping the harassment?
