  • I am only still up cuz I put Dylan into his cot tonight for the 1st time !!

Not a big deal on its own, but its in his own room too
He is only 8 weeks, but is the full length of the moses basket and keeps banging his head, and there is no room for the cot in my room :o He looks so tiny in it

Went to see the latest Harry Potter film tonight with my Step Gran, was quite good. Still hate how they add things in though!

I'm still fuming on the inside about having to pay out £130, it's a good job we keep a few hundred "spare" in the bank for such things, we really need to get a move on and get an ISA and ACTUALLY save. We waste a lot of money on CRAP.

Love the economy gastronomy, but I keep calling it astronomy gastronomy much to OH's amusement, bit of a tongue tier. See I didn't think £2 odds for a "posh" meal per head is that bad, you pay about £9 at a chain pub for a tough steak and overcooked chips!

It's given me the incentive to plan meals though, I'm stuck in a rut, we have the same stuff ALL the time and it's boring.

    Chilli
    Chilli nachos
    Spag bol
    Currys of diffo varietys
    Sausage casserole
    Toad in the hole
    Roast dinner
    Shepherds pie.
    Tuna pasta bake

AND THATS ABOUT IT! Least it's all home cooked but BLAH it's boring, I mean what can I do with bacon? I have about 5 packs frozen in the freezer, only time I use it is when we want buttys. I have no imagination and I do have some cookbooks but they are really awful, some have no pics (I NEED PICS!) and someone gave me a marks & sparks recipe book - I CANT AFFORD VEAL and RACK OF LAMB ETC, jeez louise!

I also have a good cookbook thats meals under a fiver, but some of the things look MINGING, beans, suede and potato in a casserole dish. That's it? That's not a meal! That's something you scoop onto your plate at the side......

Oh also insists everything must have meat. Though he wants to try that macaroni cheese recipe from the show, but no artichokes and it must have the bacon.....!

  • Had a busy few days (for a change) since I introduced myself on here - been to parents in Dorset for a weekend and then up to the big smoke on Tuesday for my flexible working meeting. Took Harriet with me and she was an absolute angel, charmed all my colleagues - ended up paying for it yesterday as she was a right grump all day - seems to be in a better mood this morning though.

There have been some lovely pictures of babies and dogs in the last few days - thanks for sharing!

Finally a question - as H is now too big for the baby bath has anyone used a bath support before going straight to the big bath unsupported? I've seen one in Tesco for about £6 and it looks pretty sturdy but was wondering if anyone had tried one?

    Bacon and tomato pasta?
    Fry bacon and onion.
Add a load of chopped tomatoes (and some herbs if you want) and leave to simmer away for a while and reduce a bit.
    Meanwhile cook some pasta.
When they're both ready, mix together and serve with a bit of grated cheese on the top.

I guess £2/portion is good compared to what the people were having but some of us spend less than £2/peron/day so from that point of view £2/portion is expensive.

If you have a slow cooker, you can do a roast in it and then make stock and use the stock to make a soup or stew. Soup/stew I just throw together whatever veg I have/think will go well together. Onion and celery can go in all soups/stews and are generally not too expensive.

    Hi DK

I have never used a baby bath, I remember hating lugging the thing about full of water and it breaking my back, as well as the water sploshing all over the floor. I bought a bath chair.....it is moulded plastic in a laying down position:) Although Kai (5mths) now keeps trying to jump off it or sit up in it, so I am going to get one of the sitting up support chairs next time I go to Asda:D

Bacon: obvious choice would be risotto :)
    Must have ingredients:
Rice (either arborio or it can be cooked with plain long grain :) )
Stock (cubes are fine - I perfer veg ones but which ever you want)
    Onion & garlic
Cheese (parmegiano is best, but a strong cheddar does just as well!)

    Optionals that go with bacon:
peas (frozen cheap ones are fine)
    white wine (cheap is fine!)
    mushrooms (fresh, tinned or dried)

One of the easiest dishes round and cheap! :D

Another possibility is DHs fave danish leftover dish. I usually have to cook the potatos especially for it as i never cook too many spuds lol!

Ok enough boiled potato's for however many adults you have. They can be peeled or still have peel on if they are new potato's - your choice :)
They MUST be cooled - otherwise they fall apart in the second stage!

Chop up the potato's into cubes about die size
Chop up an onion or two (for 2 people 1 medium onion is fine, if you love onion then use a large one)
Chop up one of the following (for 2 people): 6 rashers of bacon, 6 hotdog sausages (the beechwood smoked ones - I buy them when they're on offer :D), 1/2 a mattesons sausage or left over meat from a roast like pork, beef or lamb.
in a large frying pan (or large pot) melt some butter and throw in the onion and fry till it turns clear, now throw in the meat - if you use left over roast make sure it's roughly the same size as the potato pieces - and make sure it's hot through. Now add a little more butter and add the potato cubes. Keep stirring occassionally until everything is hot through - don't stir too much because you want the potatos to brown in the butter - this is what really makes it taste lush!

Serve with brownsauce or tomato ketchup :)

    Simples!

we bought this and its really good. we were going to get a support but thought it would be a waste of money as he was just about too big, but this is fine. they do need to be able to sit up a bit by themselves though really, seth couldnt when we first got it and we had to hold him up a bit which was quite akward! OH does bath time, he sits him in it and lets him play and washes the bits he can reach, then he takes him out and does him bits quickly. before we had this we had to bath him together cos he was too wriggly to hold and wash! its £10 in asda. EBM does separate Sami - if you heat it slightly and swirl it round it comes back together again and is fine.

Put the bacon in the Mac Cheese ;) easy!!

    Also bacon = spaghetti carbonara.
Fry bacon & onion in a teeny bit of oil to soften.
Add mushrooms and cook for a little while whilst you boil some spaghetti.
Then (cheats way) add cream to the pan (elmlea pretend single cream is fine and lasts forever), a little bit of mustard, pepper, parmesan and simmer til it thickens.
Add spaghetti and voila - yummy carbonara :D

Real carbonara involves adding an egg but it takes some skill to not end up with scrambled egg!!

Also - how about fajitas? simple and kids love em! I make a spicy version for me and hubby and a plain version for DSS.

We also have risotto, homemade pizza (kids love making their own!), stir frys, lots of 'whatever we have left' pastas and soups, lasagne, cottage pie, home-cooked ham and wedges, lots of steamed chicken and new potatoes and if they are really lucky I will make sweet and sour from scratch :D

Edit - DK - Benjamin comes in the bath with me or daddy (we don't bathe him every day) his confidence in the water is really improving :)
