  • OK, done some thinking - and checking what we were given for our wedding!

Good quality suitcases - actually my uncle gave us the money, and we bought what we wanted from a factory outlet.
Some porcelain candlesticks, which had a particular meaning for us.
We seemed to get various bits and pieces that were neither use nor ornament! ::), but at least people were thinking of us...

How about a Dualit toaster or kettle - I can't imagine anyone not liking those? Amazon sell the 2 slice toaster for £98.42, and the kettles start at £49.47

Are they getting married in Church? If they are, you could always offer to pay for the bells - it cost us about £80 2 years ago and would be a lovely memory for them. The same could go if they are having a soloist etc?

Tickets for a West End show? Something like Chicago might be nice?
A mohair or lambswool throw - both cost about £100 at http://www.abound.co.uk . I would suggest getting neutral colours unless you know they have a particular colour scheme in mind.
2 half day cooking courses in Suffolk will cost £55 each here:-http://www.cookingexperience.co.uk/experiences.htm but there may well be other places nearer you doing the same thing. Found this on cantbarsed:-

The Cooking Experience - EXCLUSIVE - Promotional Code - Special Offer
5% discount off ALL cooking experiences.

Enter 11204816 into the Vouchers field on the shopping trolley then click the Recalucate button to update the trolley.

    Expires 31st December 2004"

I hope this has given you a few ideas - if you find out anything more about the couple come back to us!

    Merry Christmas

  • If they live together chances are they will pretty much have everything for the house.

Give them some gift vouchers - either the highs treet vouchers you can spend anywhere or Argos / M&S vouchers.
Believe me, they are more welcome than ANOTHER toaster which will get put in the cupboard!

That way they can get what they wish - whether it's an essential or a luxury.

You could ask if they have a wedding list or maybe ask the parents of the bride and groom.

Don't go out and buy them a present for the sake of it - vouchers are much better and don't sit in the attic!

    Hi,
We got married a year ago and one of our most precious gifts was the Royal Doulton Bride and Groom Figure. It is pure white and very graceful. Also very meaningful and a beautiful keepsake
    http://www.royaldoulton.com/website/product/productdetail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441762390&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474395181158&bmUID=1104587824324&bmLocale=en_GB

Sorry for the VERY long link, but its featured here. Places like debenhams, H Samuel, Ortak sell it for nearly £100, but the website says £59.00

    Others Here: http://www.giftandwrap.co.uk/acatalog/coflove.html
Also recived as gifts, again beautiful keepsakes.
    Hope this helps,
    Davesmum .

I would check first to see if they have a gift list.

We got married in Feb (2004) and most people stuck to the list (which was just for high street vouchers). However, some people do try to be original and buy you things they think you need.

I don't want to appear ungrateful, but I think we would have prefered it if everyone had stuck to the list as we already have a house full of belongings, and a few things got duplicated.

If you really feel the need to be original I would go with the theatre tickets or cooking course ideas.

when we got married a few years ago, someone paid for us to have an extra 'special' print from our photos.

If you know the parents you could perhaps ask about photographer.

Some student friends took loads of casual photos and got several extra copies, one lot in an albumn and did a montage of some of the fun pictures.

One of the nicest presents I saw was a friend who was an accomplished amateur photographer took lots of casual snaps in black and white and had them printed on nice matt paper and mounted them in a really classy album - the couple were chuffed to bits (although divorced 7 years later...). How about planting up a really nice garden pot with bulbs that will flower when they get married, or even better when they return from their honeymoon. You can get bulbs to flower from February right through to September/Oct if you include things like lilies and begonias. You could do a white/cream themed pot. You could buy a pair of bay trees or a pair of lavender bushes in nice pots. Do you know an artist who could paint the church (if it's a church wedding) for them? We had a pair of beautiful hand blown glasses given to us which are gorgeous. To be honest practical things are lovely, but thoughtful things are even better. Nice picture frames (for wedding photos) are good. You could be very contemporary and buy them a DAB radio.

Can find no information on the web for this...

What should be the total amount of this list/number of guests? ie how much should you put on there per guest?

    Thanks for any help.

You can go into most department stores and ask about wedding lists. Some of them give you a handheld scanner and you wander round the store and anything you want to go on your list you just scan it in.Then when someone buys an item the store remove it from the computers main list.
When we done ours we put a few expensive things on the list as some of our family club in together to get a more expensive gift but we also put cheaper things on it as some couldn't afford as much.We had a few copies made and only gave them to people who asked for the list.Personally though we got mostly cash as we had been living together a few years before we got married.
