The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Conceive when its just not happening (12m+)

Hi Ladies
I normally post on the under 12m thread - although know that some of my virtual friends from there also post on here.
Background is that I have been off the pill for 12 months although initially I was just NTNP so been actively trying since September.
I am 41 & OH is 45. Neither have any kids (never wanted them until I turned 40). Damn biolgoical clock!
My BMI is 34 (have lost a couple of stone over the last year & still working on this).
Have been to the GP who has arranged the initial tests which show that I do ov & that OH's SA is OK (got these results this week). Obviously pleased to get these results. I have regular cycles of around 26-28 days.
No further NHS support is available (due to age & weight) so I have booked a private FS appt at the local BMI hospital.
This is in 2 weeks time. What can I expect to happen at this appointment?
Thanks.0 -
Welcome TTC40:wave:
It's usually just talk on the first appt, but they may do an internal scan and some bloodtests (day 3 & day 21). They may book you in to check if your tubes are clear or lap & dye to check your insides.
My second clinic preferred to do their own tests, so DH had to do another SA.
Good luck:)0 -
I've had 3 different "first" FS appointments at different points in my life, all private. As QQ says, it always starts with a detailed discussion about your medical and gynaecological history. It will help if you can go with information about the length of your cycles, regularity, length and heaviness of your bleeds. For me, its always then moved on, in the same appointment, to a pelvic exam and a "dildocam" scan, and with blood tests to be organised at different points in the cycle. DH didn't have to repeat his SA for us.
This was then followed up by a further consultation after the results of all the blood tests were in to discuss the options. I wasn't offered a lap and dye until about 6 months after my first appointment, and only after clomid had been tried unsuccessfully, but that may have been because my initial scan and blood tests showed I had PCOS. If there is no obvious cause for problems from the initial tests, they may move on to more invasive tests more quickly.0 -
Thanks Nicki & Q. Will make sure I am clean & fresh for the appt
. Just to add, I am usually clean & fresh anyway. 0 -

Definitely go! In terms of how you should live life after the ET, you can carry on as normal although I was advised to avoid 'strenuous' exercise and try not to get really hot.
The only thing you might have to watch is the date of your ET. If your embryos go to blastocyst (after collection on the 23rd) you might be offered an ET transfer of Day 5 which means the 28th. Chances are though that you'll have it earlier. In which case, go! Enjoy yourself; it will be nice to have something to look forward to and take your mind off the 2ww."Growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell" - Edward Abbey.0 -

thanks, i think i will, we didn't go to blastocyst last time, but if we do i think my friend would be happy to go without me as she thinks gino is fab
, to be honest i think it might make me more relaxed as its the 4th go and i'll only be on my own worrying if i'm at home, and being spoilt for the weekend might be just what the doctor ordered
TTc40 welcome, i can only really agree with the others, but i do tend to shave my legs and prepare to bare all
good luck and lets hope things get moving for you

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
I shave my legs and put on nice socks, but it's up to you:p
Some like to wear skirts as then they don't have to be completely naked from waist down, but I don't bother with that these days:o
It's amazing how quickly you get used to baring all, and having strange people prodding around 'down there'! I remember when a smear test used to be a huge issue for me ........ now I'll just drop my pants and spread my legs without any worries! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Trying to jump back onto the moneysaving wagon .... :cool:0 -

I'd definitely go if I was you, provided obviously the dates don't clash. Mmmmmmmm, Gino D'Acampo, he's yummy!! It'll give u something to look forwards too, and hopefully take some of the stress away xTrying to jump back onto the moneysaving wagon .... :cool:0
