I've never been to Poland - nearest I've been to Eastern Europe is in Austria, 3k from the Hungarian border ... and passing through Yugoslavia on the train on the way to Greece.

The salt mines sound fantastic, you *have* to go there. Auschwitz too, tho of course I wouldn't describe it as fantastic. As well as being an SF nut, I'm a flight nut, so I'd go to the Aviation Museum. I'd always go to the castle and the cathedral (website says its the spiritual home of the nation, sounds quite a big deal). Kazimierz sounds like the old Jewish quarter, which was probably turned into the ghetto - you'll have to take a *lot* of tissues if you go there as well as Auschwitz. Oh my god, and I've just seen that Oskar Schindler's factory is being re-opened in late autumn as a museum, there's an introductory show in September tho. The Dachsund Parade on September 6th sounds really funny, will you be there then? I'd probably go to a concert so I could soak up the ambience of the hall.

I want to go to Poland now!

the hotel we are staying at has a boat that drops people off at the castle and on a monday (as far as i am aware ) the entrance is free so i was hoping to do that as well ....the hotel is right next to Kazimierz district as well as far as i know alot of that area is now the night life area (but i may be wrong) ...i will be there on the 6th septmber so will try and find out about this parade ...never thought of a concert but it is the kinda thing we enjoy doing ...hubby is like you an avaition nut we go to the air show every year (i love tornados) so he would be happy there ...were both sf nuts as well ...did you hear about bobby carlysle in the new stargate?

Hi El, sorry, I had to go work, I'm back now (with a coffee, half decaff, half caff!) so will look for that site again and post the link.

    EDIT this is the one:

    http://www.cracow-life.com/

    Lovely.

ANOTHER EDIT: yes, I knew about Bobby, but Shaun posted a link to the official site, and there's some clips and interviews on there I hadn't seen, it was great. They're going for a Battlestar Galactica look, have hired the same producer or director, one of the two....

i think sally ate him ...had him with chocolate and raspberry sauce she was after his house i reckon ...lol ....

yes although i was trying to keep things running financialy the last few days i wasnt able to concentrate on it ...today though now that every thing that i can do has been done i can get back on the old horse lol .... my wage slip arrived aswell and i got £200 more than i had planned ...now i would normally pay this straight off the overdraft but just incase it is needed i will keep it here ...it would mean that if i needed to up my over draft it would be by £250 (£200 extra wage £50 i just paid) less than i mightve needed ...if however son manages to get things sorted at the uni (he is away there today ) and the social then i will transfer it over straight away ...before i am tempted to spend it ...i am kinda glad in a way though that if i do need to up my over draft it wont be by as much as i thought it would be ...that is great...

Hi El... just stumbled in here, hope you're well :hello: I went to Krakow last year, spent err five days I think it was - definitely worth visiting the castle and having a walk by the river near by.. Kazimierz is really interesting too. We spent a lot of time just wandering around the parks and streets.. and the main square, there's some nice restaurants there (although they are a bit more expensive than other places because of their location) and there seemed to be lots of entertainment, local folk music, dancing etc on most of the time.. and lots of people watching to be done! Definitely try the local food - I loved the sour soup, and the Jewish dumplings in Kazimierz.. drool. There's also a really good Brazilian place if you fancy something a bit different! http://www.cracowonline.com/210-Ipanema-Restaurant

Oh and we went to the giant Tesco.. that was fun :rotfl:

Didn't make it to the salt mines but did go to Auschwitz, wouldn't have missed it for anything but a very harrowing day.

Are you on Facebook? I've got a few pictures of the trip on there if you're interested (although there are quite a lot of drunken vodka-drinking ones!)

Hope you have a fab time! x
