Noooo, my mum is a worrier. And she would panic me. No, she can come when we're all clean an lovely.

Some friends have offered, which I may still accept, but I think I might prefer it if it is just me and the midwives. Apparently the students would be most grateful for the opportunity to keep me company if that is what I wanted.

I'm also quite shy, so having someone there who knows me, and who I would have to see again in the future, doesn't really appeal to me that much.

  • Thank you MFD! Not sure my hospital is posh enough to have en suites though...

I'd be the same as you Harley. Definitely would not want my Mum there- she would drive me mad. I think the student midwife idea is a great one though as they'll have seen it all before but will be there with you throughout.

  • after i had jackson, the midwives left us alone for a cuddle and to breastfeed. after about half an hour i got up to have a shower and what seemed like pints of blood poured out of me, i was so embarassed at the mess i had made, i tried to help them clean up but i was in too much pain. so when you do go for a shower remember to hold some absorbant pads / towels under you!

LOL - and for ages after!! The blood loss is quite frightening! As is the midwife who wants to look at your pad to check it

  • Harley - you can't always guarantee there will be a student around so maybe you need to discuss this with your MW next time you see her.

Have you thought about a doula? Although I think you may have to pay for one so not very MSE!!

If you do go for a friend I would pick one who has already done it if I were you - if not you probably want your most practical friend and not someone who is going to be all touchy feely.

I wouldn't worry about anyone 'watching' you or seeing you give birth - when it comes down to it your body takes over and the last thing on earth you will feel is embarrassed.

  • And my tip for washing yourself is take 2 flannels or a baby sponge so you can wash your bits separate to the rest of you (although if you have stitches you may not want to even go near it!!) I think I just gingerly touched a baby sponge against myself.

And I used baby wash - it is probably the most gentle thing you can buy so it doesn't sting :o

Harley- i'm sure the student mw's would be lucky to be with you.

DH is extremely squeamish and not looking forward to the birth at all. so we have compromised and at the moment, he's coming in until it gets too much for him. i'm hoping that once he is there, he will want to stay but, if it is too much for him i have thts fine. i know he tried to stay. he said his mum can go but i;ve put my foot down. if there is to ne any mums there it will be mine. but as she is in ireland thats unlikely to happen

Whe i had my DS, they wiped him over, weighed him, then put him onto my breast (which i wasn't expecting at all so soon, i hadn't thought this far ahead!) Then they gave me some tea and toast, which i thought was random cos i wasn't hungry.

Then they sent me to in the shower which i didn't question i just went off on my way still in a daze. Mother stayed with baby!

I went into the shower and my pethidine kicked in - and hey presto i'd drank 17 bottles of vodka :rotfl: I had had a quick labour and it takes about 30 mins to kick in, so the fact it kicked in in the shower scares me at how fast it all happened!!

after a section it is the next morning before you can have a shower as the catheter needs to be removed. A MW will normally go in with you as they will need to check the dressing and make sure your stitches dont open. After Jas I think Chris was there to look after her, but this time Dylan wasnt with me anyway, so it didnt matter.
DEF baby wash and not normal shower gel, and dont try to clean yourself too quickly, and if you like really soft towels, use your own !!
But be prepared for the amount of blood that there actually is !!!
