If it wasn't that my mum is here, i would have been going woohoo out loud to you having your tax money sorted, before it is needed. that is definitely worth a :j and a . WELL DONE MATE. That is fab.

Also well done on taking money for the xmas food. A step forward too.

Nice to get some back pay. Ok OH may not have spent it in a necessarily good way in one way, but at least you can make that £400 of food stretch to at least the equivalent of £600 I know!

Good luck with the pay packet, and saving for those yearly costs this year

Thanks everyone - but please don't get too excited about my having the tax money, I don't know how I'm going to pay the MOT and car expenses in March....

The DWP rang OH this week and said he's not eligible for Jobseekers Allowance as I work too many hours. We're not eligible for free school meals because I earn too much. Obviously those are both good things, but I feel frustrated he didn't discover this weeks ago.

Today I made him sit down with me and go through a pile of paperwork which was very instructive. It was shocking to realise that he still has no clue what direct debits go out of his account each month, even though I made him write a list not many months ago.

It's clear that my earnings aren't enough to meet our outgoings and he HAS to get a job. But this has been the case for a long time really.

On the positive side... today I made an appointment with a pensions adviser. I am signing up to the work scheme and will get advice on what to do with the several titchy pots of pension money I have accumulated to date. Also, a friend gave me a bag of clothes which include several decent work tops, sorely needed.

I think that's it on money. On other matters, we are eight inches deep in snow here and the schools have been closed since Tuesday. The children hare having a wonderful time.

Sorry that you are not eligable for any assistance.......OH and I had a similar problem in the last recession, when he was made redundant 3 times, but was never able to claim a penny because I earned too much.

I really hope he gets his act together soon - I have to admit that I don't know if I could put up with that sort of apathy for long, so you obviously have far more patience than I do!

Kids the country over must be loving this weather......we have a scarecrow festival in the autumn, but we could have a snowman festival right now instead!

Oh I am not at all patient! I am the nastiest naggiest partner going. It is bad for my soul! I often contemplate taking drastic action such as kicking him out, but the children love him and would be devastated. And he does have many good points. Right now, for example, he is making me a BLT sandwich for my lunch tomorrow.

I will join you in the nagging wives club then.......I think in years gone by, wives who nagged were put in the stocks or something.......I would def be a candidate for that

    Hi Seax
well you know how I feel about this situation. Out of interest would your OH go bankrupt? Would this help with the finances? I know that one person in a marriage can do this, as my step sister did this.....

    just a thought....
If he won't work to pay it back then maybe he has to take the 'shame' of being bankrupt.....

Hiya! I don't think bankruptcy is an option for him as he has very little debt in his name anyway. So far we've always managed to pay all the debts, and they are all on 0% or low interest so sadly I don't think there's any real alternative to just continuing to pay them. The thing that makes me saddest is that he is so talented and capable of working hard, but just can't somehow find work. He is going to see visit two studios where he has heard hints of work going once the snow has cleared (we are very snowbound here and as he broke 3 ribs before Christmas he is cautious about walking on the ice).
