Missed call scam

  • Once your registered with TPS it's for life.

Unscrupulous telemarketers are more prepared to run the risk of being prosecuted as the fine is cheaper than having to pay for a license to check the TPS list and they will only pay a fine if they are caught.
On the other hand, The Data Protection Act Does allow for criminal prosecution and compensation and telemarketers pay nothing to check your details if you are registered with http://www.optoutuk.co.uk
  • My partner's mobile phone rang briefly at the weekend and it showed up as an 075 number. Needless to say she didn't phone back.

I am aware that mobile nos begin 077, 078 or 079. Is 075 a mobile prefix too?

Like other MSErs have said if we don't recognise the number we do not return the call. If it's important they will phone back - if they don't phone back, it wasn't important!
  • Ive been getting missed calls all day from a +35593049211. each time it rings just once and hangs up. From what i can garther it appears to be an albanian number. No way am i ring that back.
  • Thats disgusting, barbaric and not very democratic. We live in the free West.

Only today did I recieve a missed call from 08452788000. Someone left a message saying "please ring back on this number, there is some excellent news for you, news that will change your life forever".......yea right!

  • Re: maninthestreet, Randomist, yellowyid and ZZ_von_schnerk comments above. Just to clarify ORC International are a very reputable market research firm, who are not trying to sell you anything. You are likely a customer of a service provider such as a bank or satellite tv or government department who have outsourced their customer satisfaction survey to ORC International. Why do they pass on my number, you will ask.. The answer is read the small print of your bank account terms and conditions, you will see that you have agreed to allow your number to be passed on in this way.

Furthermore, market research is wholly allowed by the TPS. Market research companies such as ORC International are perfectly allowed to call people who are registered with the TPS as they are simply conducting surveys, and not selling.

The reason it may have rung 4 times only, is because that is the standard number of rings set in which to answer.

More information can be found at the Market Research Society (mrs) website who regulate the industry.

Are you connected with ORC as it seems odd to drag up an old thread and to tell us that ORC is allowed to pester people.
