Missed call scam

In the past week I have had 2 missed calls on my mobile from the following numbers.
08700426655
07011123796
If you get these calls, DO NOT call back. You will get an automated saying "we are try to connect you to the person you are calling" or something similar, to keep you holding on, whilst being charged £1.50 a minute

I had a quick look

I cant find anything about the other numbers, but I do find it disturbing that companies are allowed to operate in this way.
It was reported on BBC watchdog a few weeks back regarding a company that does this, and one guys partner doubted her husbands word when he got some rather indecent messages, she thought he was having an affair.0 -
I have just had a missed call from 07042511837 and when called back, a message similar to the one mentioned by the OP was announced. I cut the call pronto and am feeling anxious now about it ...0

I had a missed call the other day. Didn't ring it. Didn't recognise the number - wondering if it was one of these now .....0

I keep getting calls (similar sort of number I think) - anyway they leave a message on 1571 and all it says is "please press 9" - which I kinda think would be a scam to get you to connect to something that charges extortionate prices per minute. Don't know what it is thoughSquares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0

Best thing is if you dont reconize the number don't call back. If its that important call they ring you back, otherwises its a scam or as often the case somoene trying to flog you something.0

I agree totally. I once kept getting missed calls from a specific number but I never answered it, I got fed up of them so I did a google with the telephone number that was coming up and it came up with where it was!Weight Loss - 102lb0 -
I agree with Poppycat. Don't get curious about a number that you don't recognise and don't call back. I confess I was a bit curious earlier, probably because my boss is going through some changes at work and might have gotten himself a personal 070 number and I thought he might have tried to call me. Anyway, I have now found out which company is on record at ICSTIS as owning/operating the number that called me this morning and I will write to them to ask them what the call is about - they are based in Chelmsford. It will be interesting to see if I get a reply, if any. (They only provide an 0870 contact number and I am not going to use that to call them!)
If anyone is interested, although I am currently a Vodafone user (and have been for the last 5 years), I was with Orange before. It would seem that Orange's old customers list was sold to various marketing companies and as recently as Christmas I got a call from a company trying to sell me Orange phones. I have no proof whatever whether there is any relation between these old lists and the call I got today.0 -
Lol, I was the opposite, I had just moved from Vodafone to Orange when I had the phone calls!Weight Loss - 102lb0

I have had a couple of calls over recent months from a call centre you no the type you pick up and no one is there, a silent call.
I goggled the number and found out the number was legit, it was a call centre, a company ringing on behalf of MBNA.
But its always worth checking even if your curious rather than ring back.0 -

Some truth, but not £1.50 a minute
0870 04 numbers are charged at National NTS rates (7.91 pence per minute)
0701 11 numbers are charged at rate pn2 (50 pence per minute).0
